Larry Wilmore joins Stephen Colbert as guest host on The Late Show

Larry Wilmore, former correspondent for The Daily Show and host of the recently canceled The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, hit late-night television again on Thursday, subbing in for Stephen Colbert during the monologue on The Late Show.

The comedian appeared in Colbert’s place during the show’s opening, poking fun at Donald Trump’s speech in Arizona this week. “I haven’t seen that many angry white people since they canceled a Coldplay concert,” he joked.

Wilmore’s Comedy Central show The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, which had taken the timeslot previously occupied by The Colbert Report, was canceled last month due to low ratings. When Colbert interrupted Wilmore’s monologue Thursday to reclaim hosting duties, Wilmore joked, “I’m sorry man, I thought whoever leaves 11:30 at Comedy Central just gets the Late Show?”

Colbert responded, “That’s not how it works.” Wilmore quipped, “It’s because I’m black, isn’t it?”

Following The Night Show‘s cancellation, Comedy Central released a statement thanking Wilmore and his staff for “addressing social issues of great importance to the country, always challenging people’s attitudes, perceptions, and bias.”
