Lane Kiffin explains why Ole Miss football added QBs Spencer Sanders, Walker Howard
OXFORD — As he often does, Ole Miss football coach Lane Kiffin spoke in NFL terms when he broke down his two quarterback additions out of the transfer portal.
Spencer Sanders, a four-year starter at Oklahoma State, is the veteran. Walker Howard, a top-five quarterback in last year's recruiting class from LSU, is the draft pick.
"I'm very excited about the quarterback room," Kiffin said Wednesday. "I was very concerned about it from pure numbers, you guys can figure that out. My job is to put together the best roster every year. And you know, we had a chance to bring those two guys in."
Kiffin was asked if there would be a quarterback competition between Sanders, Walker and returning starter Jaxson Dart and did not provide a straight answer.
He did, however, explain that he was pleased with Dart's progress as the season went on. Dart finished the season with a 62.4% completion rate, 2,974 passing yards, 20 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
"I think Jaxson did a lot of great things last year," Kiffin said. "I know Jaxson, when he initially played versus the middle and end, dramatically improved for a young quarterback. We're very excited about continuing that."
Prior to their bowl game, the Rebels knew they had a numbers problem at quarterback. Luke Altmyer had entered the portal, leaving Ole Miss without a truly viable backup option.

It seemed like Howard would be the solution to that issue when he announced his commitment on Jan. 18. The true surprise came later that week, when Sanders ‒ a veteran with just one season of eligibility left – announced he'd be spending that season at a program with an established quarterback.
"The quarterback room is dramatically in a much better position than it was a year ago," Kiffin said. "That's really our goal with our whole roster and every position every year is to continue to improve what goes out versus what comes in, and continue to win that battle. That will be very exciting to see those guys develop."
