New Land Forms as Lava Reaches Sea on Spain's La Palma
A new headland grew on the Spanish island of La Palma into September 29 as lava from the erupting Cumbre Vieja volcano reached the Atlantic Ocean, footage from the Canary Islands Volcanology Institute (Involcan) shows.
The Guardia Civil warned, one of Spain’s two national police forces, warned people within 2.2 miles (3.5 km) of the site to stay in their homes “given the possibility of harmful gas” as the molten lava hit the water.
Involcan said on Monday that the lava and sea water would combine to create “water vapor loaded with hydrochloric acid”. The dangers presented by such gas, including skin irritation and breathing difficulties, would be “very local,” it added. Credit: INVOLCAN via Storyful
