Lance Reddick, The Wire and John Wick star, dies at 60

Lance Reddick, the veteran actor known for his work on such TV series as The Wire, Fringe, and Bosch, and such films as John Wick and its sequels, died Friday of natural causes. He was 60.

Reddick's publicist confirmed the news to EW and said in a statement, "Lance will be greatly missed. Please respect his family's privacy at this time."

The star's wife, Stephanie Reddick, released a statement paying tribute to him and thanking fans on Saturday. "Lance was taken from us far too soon," she wrote. "Thank you for all your overwhelming love, support, and beautiful stories shared on these platforms over the last day. I see your messages and can't begin to express how grateful I am to have them."

Reddick had recently been doing press for John Wick: Chapter 4, which hits theaters March 24 and finds him reprising his role as Charon, the unflappable concierge of the Continental Hotel. He previously appeared in the first three John Wick movies and was cast in the spin-off Ballerina last year.

A Baltimore native, Reddick studied music at the University of Rochester and went on to attend the Yale School of Drama. His first big TV role came on the HBO prison drama Oz in 2000, and he went on to star on the network's acclaimed series The Wire, playing Baltimore police officer Cedric Daniels.

Reddick's Wire costar Wendell Pierce remembered him as "a man of great strength and grace" in a statement posted to Twitter. "As talented a musician as he was an actor. The epitome of class. [A] sudden unexpected sharp painful grief for our artistic family. An unimaginable suffering for his personal family and loved ones. Godspeed my friend. You made your mark here. RIP."

With his commanding voice and imposing presence, Reddick often portrayed authority figures: G-man Phillip Broyles on Fringe, power-hungry scientist Albert Wesker on Netflix's Resident Evil series, gruff LAPD chief Irvin Irving on Bosch, corrosive CEO Christian DeVille on Corporate.

His other screen credits included Lost, Godzilla vs. Kong, Rick & Morty, and One Night in Miami. Earlier this year, Reddick was cast as Zeus in Disney+'s upcoming Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, which is based on the popular Rick Riordan fantasy novels.

In addition to TV and film, Reddick worked on a number of video games, with prominent roles in Horizon Zero Dawn, Horizon Forbidden West, Destiny, Destiny 2, and Quantum Break.

In addition to his wife, Reddick is survived by his children Yvonne Nicole Reddick and Christopher Reddick. Donations in his memory can be made to MomCares, an organization serving under-supported mothers and families in the Baltimore area.
