Lamers bus driver drank beer on a Green Bay school's field trip to Madison. Now he's fired.

GREEN BAY - A bus driver was fired after admitting to drinking beer during a Lincoln Elementary School field trip on Monday to Madison, Lamers Bus Lines announced in a statement Tuesday.

Fourth- and fifth-graders from Lincoln Elementary were in the bus coming back from Madison when a student noticed a can of beer was leaking under the bus driver's seat.

Teachers on the field trip told the Green Bay School District and the district notified Lamers Bus, a bus company for many Wisconsin school districts.

The company said the bus was chartered recently and may not have been cleaned.

Teachers said they couldn't smell alcohol on the bus driver and didn't see any impaired driving, the district said in a letter sent to Lincoln Elementary families Monday afternoon.

But the bus driver admitted to officers he drank beer while students were on the field trip, the letter said.

Green Bay police and a Lamers supervisor met the bus when it returned to the elementary school. The driver was evaluated based on Wisconsin Department of Transportation regulations.

Lincoln Elementary is located on South Buchanan Street on the city's west side.
