Lake Worth Beach brewery holds restaurant's grand opening with ribbon-cutting ceremony

Though it had a soft opening on Dec. 8, Mathews Brewing Co. Scratch Kitchen in Lake Worth Beach will have their grand opening on Friday, Jan. 5.

Happening at 3 p.m., the event will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the restaurant on Dixie Highway that will be attended by Lake Worth Beach CRA officials and members of the Lake Worth Beach city commission.

It will also coincide with the release of their full menu, which includes a mix of high-end bar and pub food.

Owner and head brewmaster Dave Mathews said they've been gradually expanding towards their full menu since their soft opening.

He said they're making sure the crew is properly trained and that the presentation is perfect on each menu item before rolling out the next one.

In addition to making sure things are done correctly, they've also made a few tweaks to the menu and a few additions from what they had originally planned.

Mathews said that two of those include an extra vegetarian dish, the curry and chips, and their scotch egg.

Mathews Brewing Co. Scratch Kitchen chef Lisa Mercado, former chef and owner of Ravish in Lantana, suggested adding the scotch egg and it has become incredibly popular.

For the unenlightened, a scotch egg is a boiled egg, wrapped in sausage meat, that is breaded and deep fried.

Deep-fried egg encased in sausage? Yes! To take theirs up a few extra rungs on the pub food ladder, their scotch egg is served hot, uses actual bangers sausage meat and has real English mustard for dipping.

Though popular, the scotch egg is not their top item so far. Mathews said that the smashburger has easily been their best seller.

He said that on a recent Saturday night, they sold an impressive 65 of them! The burger features a custom blend of beef made up of chuck, sirloin and brisket (provided by Bush Brothers Provisions Co.), Cooper's white American cheese, lettuce, tomato and their secret burger sauce. All we can tell you is that they make it in-house.

After that, another big hit that was actually bit of surprise has been their Wagyu beef hot dog. Not your ordinary dog, Mathews said it's "a step above a regular hot dog and a serious piece of beef."

Being a brewery, Mathews incorporates several of their beers into their dishes. The beer cheese sauce that goes with their Bavarian pretzel is made with their Night Moves Amber Ale and the batter for their fish & chips uses their Palm Beach Lager.

Though business inside the restaurant has been good, Mathews said that they are doing far more deliveries to the brewery side, which is separated from the restaurant by a narrow alley.

He said patrons inside the brewery use the QR code on each table to see the menu, place their order and have it delivered right to them.

Mathews said this was expected and that from the start, the restaurant was "built to serve the brewery."

In addition to the ribbon cutting ceremony with Lake Worth Beach officials and the release of their full menu, there will be music by the Cris & Alex duo at 7:30 p.m., $1 off all pints from 3 to 6 p.m. and the release of three special beers for the occasion.

These will include Morning Cake-a caramel cream ale, Dream On-a toasted coconut cream ale and Hoppy Endings Hazy IPA.
