Lady Gaga's First Movie After 'A Star Is Born' Is Announced, & It's a Gucci Murder Drama

In her first feature-length film following A Star Is Born, Lady Gaga will appear in a Gucci murder drama — and by the sounds of it, she could be headed for her next Best Actress nomination. Ridley Scott, the filmmaker behind iconic movies like Alien and Gladiator, has committed to direct the Gaga-fronted film about the volatile and, at times, violent history of the Gucci family fashion dynasty.

That tumultuous history includes the murder of Maurizio Gucci, the grandson of founder Guccio Gucci. Not surprisingly after her Oscar-nominated turn in A Star Is Born, Gaga has been cast in what is sure to be one of the most dynamic roles of the film: Patrizia Reggiani, Maurizio’s ex-wife who was tried and found guilty of orchestrating her ex-husband’s assassination in 1995. She was released from jail in 2016 after serving 18 years for Maurizio’s murder.

It’s one of those stories that seems like something straight out of the movies but, in fact, it’s straight out of the headlines. Or, subsequently, out of the pages of the Sara Gay Forden book The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed. The tale will be adapted for the screen by Roberto Bentivegna.

If you haven’t heard the backstory, we’ll give you the CliffsNotes version. Reggiani and Maurizio married in 1972 when they were both 24 years old, turning them into one of Italy’s most prominent power couples. They had two daughters together over the course of the next decade. But in 1985, Maurizio told his wife he was going on a short business trip — and he never came back. There was a new, younger woman in his life.

After a lengthy and tense legal battle, Reggiani and Maurizio divorced in 1994. A year later, he was gunned down on the steps of his office. In November 1998, Reggiani was convicted of being the mastermind of her ex-husband’s murder, having enlisted the help of four accomplices. She was released from jail in 2016 and, to this day, contends she was wrongfully convicted. “I am not guilty, but I am not innocent. All the things that happened were a misunderstanding,” she said on People Magazine Investigates: Crimes of Fashion, which aired last fall.

So, as you can see, Gaga just landed a complex, dramatic part full of intrigue, mystery, tragedy and, yes, fashion. It will be interesting to see what she does with it.
