Lady Gaga took a break from the pop world to break our hearts with A Star Is Born (specifically, with “Shallow”). But now, the icon is back with a new single “Stupid Love,” and has a new pop album on the way. Never one to shy away from hard truths, Gaga is opening up about the emotional steps she took to write this new album: how she battled depression, and came out with a new dance anthem.

Gaga spoke with Zane Lowe on New Music Daily about how “Stupid Love” and the rest of her album came together. She was struggling with her own pain and sadness during the writing process, but once she really dug deep and listened to what music she needed to make right now, she found that her music wanted to come out joyful, full of life and energy.

“I was feeling so down so many days when I was, you know, before I went into the studio to work,” Gaga said. “[Collaborator] Bloodpop would come up and he’d go, okay, come on, that’s enough, off the porch, and I would cry and I would say, I’m miserable, I’m sad, I’m depressed, and he’d go-he’d go, I know, and we’re gonna go make some music now.”

“[I’d go] ‘Okay, I’m gonna open the portal, I’m gonna listen, I’m gonna talk to all my fairies, all the fairies that help me write music and I’m gonna ask them what the world needs to hear,” Gaga continued. “It turns out that they were happy…and I put it into music that I believe to be so fun and energetically really pure.”

As anyone who’s listened to Gaga’s pop hits knows, her music is infectious — it’s basically impossible not to dance, and that’s not an accident. “I want people to dance and feel happy,” Gaga said. “You know, someone asked me the other day what my goal was with this album and it actually sounds ridiculous when I say it out loud. I said, ‘I would like to put out music that a big chunk of the world will hear, and it will become a part of their daily lives and make them happy every single day.'”

Given her emotional state while writing, she was surprised that the music came out like this — and that it came out so well. “I just sobbed for three minutes and this is what came out, and this is what should be there,” she said. “It made me feel so happy because I thought to myself, wow, even when you feel six feet under, you can still fire on all cylinders.”

“[We tell] ourselves we have to crawl, we tell ourselves we have to cry, we tell ourselves we have to be miserable, or that’s what I told myself,” she added. “But you can dance out.”
