Lady Gaga emotionally thanks Bradley Cooper during 'A Star Is Born' Grammys win
Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper were on different continents as each collected trophies for their musical collaboration in 2018’s A Star Is Born. In Los Angeles, the pop singer took the stage at 61st annual Grammy Awards to accept the honor for Best Pop Duo/Group for the song “Shallow,” her duet with her director and costar.
“I wish Bradley was here right now,” she exclaimed for those who were wondering where Cooper was — which was in the U.K. sweeping up the BAFTA Awards earlier in the day for Best Original Music for ASIB. “I know he wants to be here. Bradley, I loved singing this song with you.”
Mother Monster paused after first thanking God in her speech, and then soon turned to one of the central topics of her film: addiction and mental illness. “I’m so proud to be a part of a movie that addresses mental health issues and a lot of artists deal with that and we’ve got to take care of each other. So if you see somebody that’s hurting, don’t look away,” she told attendees. The speech may have jogged the memories of film fans and its famed (fictional) Grammys scene: Bradley Cooper’s character Jackson Maine, who suffers from depression and alcoholism, urinates on himself in a scene where Gaga’s Ally collects a Grammy for Best New Artist.
“Shallow” was up for four awards during Grammys night, including Record of the Year (it lost to “This Is America,” performed by Childish Gambino) ; the track also won Best Song Written for Visual Media. Gaga snagged the honor for Best Pop Solo Performance for “Joanne (Where Do You Think You’re Goin’?)” via her last album, 2016’s Joanne.
Gaga also sang “Shallow” (solo) during the telecast, with producer and song co-writer Mark Ronson playing guitar by her side.
Gaga’s social reactions to her BAFTA honor and early Grammy wins are below.
