Labor unions across the United States staged a national walkout on Monday, July 20, in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.
Thousands of workers were expected to walk off the job in solidarity, according to reports.
In Washington, demonstrators gathered on Black Lives Matter Plaza. This video shows protesters counting down the final seconds of an eight minute, 46 second length of silence, meant to represent the amount of time Minneapolis man George Floyd was pinned under the knee of Officer Derek Chauvin, resulting in Floyd’s death.
The site for the official Strike for Black Lives demands justice for black communities and immediate action from corporations and officials to dismantle systematic racism.
The strike was announced on July 8 by a collective of union partners, including the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the American Federation of Teachers, and United Farm Workers.
