LA Knight discusses his current run in the spotlight.

Throughout his career, the man behind the gimmick, Shaun Ricker, has been known by multiple names, each of which came with a distinct persona. From Eli Drake to Max Dupri, he has played a range of characters, but he has finally found something he can fully sink his teeth into with LA Knight.

In an interview with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, Knight shared his thoughts on the gimmick and called it the culmination of his wife’s work. He noted that his words resonate with people because he believes what he’s saying.

“LA Knight is the culmination of all my life’s work,” Knight said. “You believe in the character when he speaks. The reason you believe in it is because I believe in it. I believe every damn word I’m saying. If I didn’t believe it, I wouldn’t see it.

Knight went on to describe how the character has been the source of both joy and frustration, as he loves it, but he he also sees the way some people make fun of it. He emphasized that he wants to tell stories that connect with people

“This has been my biggest joy and biggest source of frustration. I love it so much. I see the way people treat it—some people make a parody out of it. For me, I’m telling stories. If I’m not telling you a story you can bite on, there is no point to it. I want this to resonate with people. I want to punch a guy once and let people know it hurts, not kick a guy 10 times in the head and see that he’s fine. I’ll pepper in some comedy, but I want it all to make sense.”

Knight (then known as Dupri) arrived on the main roster in May 2022. After his initial run with the Maximum Male Models, he switched back to the LA Knight persona and broke off on his own. In recent weeks, he has been feuding with Bray Wyatt, and the rivalry will come to a head at WWE Royal Rumble, where the two stars will clash in a Mountain Dew Pitch Black Match. The bout will be Knight’s biggest opportunity yet, and he made it clear that he’s hungry for it.

“I am craving the recognition that I am one of the best that does this,” Knight said. “I am one of the best people at doing this job. Knowing that only a small fraction of this audience was seeing that drove me insane. I want the big stage. I want this opportunity.”

WrestleZone will have coverage of WWE Royal Rumble as it airs on Saturday.
