A Los Angeles man was arrested in connection with the killing and robbery of a San Ditmas man, and the Los Angeles Police Department alleges he's linked to the separate killings of three homeless men.

Jerrid Powell, 33, was arrested Wednesday after police allege he shot and killed Nicholas Simbolon after robbing him at his home in San Dimas on Nov. 28, the department says.

Upon further investigation, police say that Powell’s vehicle matched the one used in seemingly unprovoked shootings of three homeless men over multiple days who were sleeping during the early morning hours, and that the alleged murder weapon in all of the shootings was found in the vehicle.

The four killings occurred on four consecutive days, from Sunday to Wednesday, police say.

At a press conference Saturday, Los Angeles police Chief Michael Moore said they are still looking for a motive in the killings of the homeless victims.

The vehicle used in the killings was captured on surveillance video and, according to reports from ABC News and CNN, Powell was arrested after a traffic stop made possible by a controversial automatic license plate reader system that flagged the vehicle in Beverly Hills. (Critics, including the ACLU, argue that automatic license plate scanners endanger privacy.)

“The amazing coordination and communication between our partner agencies, along with technology, helped take this dangerous individual off our streets and protect our community,” Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said Saturday.

In a post on X, the LAPD also said it was looking for any other possible victims.

Powell is being held on $2 million bond, jail records indicate. CNN reports that he is due in court Monday. It is unclear if he has retained an attorney or entered a plea.
