Kyrie Irving planning to re-sign with Celtics next summer

With Boston Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving set to hit free agency next summer, questions have swirled about his intentions and whether he plans to stay with the Celtics long term.

The 26-year-old cleared up those questions on Thursday.

Irving, speaking from the floor of TD Garden, announced he intends to re-sign with the Celtics next season.

“If you guys will have me back, I plan on re-signing here next summer,” Irving said after thanking Celtics fans at their fan fest event.

He is eligible for a four-year, $107 million extension this season, but can make roughly $80 million more by waiting until next summer and opting out of the final year of his contract — which is something he has long said he intends to do.

Irving, who is entering his eighth season in the NBA, averaged 24.4 points and 5.1 assists in 60 games last season for Boston. He underwent two surgeries in his knee, which sidelined him for the rest of the season — which included a run to the Eastern Conference Finals.
