Kristin Hersh catches up with Kyle Meredith to talk about finding direction in unlikely places, loving Nick at Nite, and her latest solo album, Clear Pond Road.

The Throwing Muses and 50 Foot Wave member chats about trashing the album she was working on prior to Clear Pond Road, how she gained newfound direction from a sign lying in a junk shop, and the record’s strong sense of geography.

Hersh also dives into how she writes songs as a means for discovery and her love of classic Nick at Nite shows like Bewitched (after which she named a new song) and Leave It to Beaver. She then touches on how she decides if a track will end up as a solo cut or a Throwing Muses track.

“The moment I reach for the guitar… that’s when I decide which entity the song is for,” she explains. “So, I write Throwing Muses songs on my Tele or my Strat, 50 Foot Wave on my SG or — well, I usually just play on SGs — and then solo on my Collins. My drummers tell me this is a stupid system, but I’ve been doing it for a long time, and I stand by it!”
