Kristin Chenoweth Marks “Wicked”'s 20th Anniversary with Letter She Got from Idina Menzel on Opening Night

"Truly was changed For. Good." the actress wrote in her caption, referencing the heartstring-tugging song in the hit musical

Kristin Chenoweth is looking back on 20 years of Wicked with a sweet memento.

On Sunday, the Broadway star, 55, marked the hit musical's milestone anniversary by sharing a collection of handwritten notes from opening night, including one from Hugh Jackman and a full-page letter from Idina Menzel, who originated the role of Elphaba opposite Chenoweth's Glinda.

The letter opened with Menzel, 52, addressing Chenoweth as her "new beautiful friend, co-ambassador through life and sister of sorcery and all forms of magic, glitter and stardust."

"I will never forget this experience as long as I live. I consider myself so lucky to be sharing it with you," she continued. "You have made me a better person — taught me so much about life and most of all friendship. I am honored to be on a stage with you, feeling just an ounce of that joy and laughter that constantly surrounds you. You are intoxicatingly precious and beautiful to me."

"Thank you for being my friend," Menzel's letter added, concluding, "I love you. - Idina."

Chenoweth captioned the post, "Found opening night letters … truly was changed For. Good.
💗💚 #Wicked20," including a nod to her and Menzel's heartfelt duet in the show, "For Good."

Wicked began playing preview performances on Oct. 8, 2003, before opening night just over three weeks later, on Oct. 30, 2003.

Having begun in a pre-Broadway San Francisco tryout, the show has gone on to tour many times and open on London's West End, and is still playing on Broadway two decades later.

Speaking with Vulture about opening night for a recent anniversary story alongside Menzel, Chenoweth admitted she doesn't remember exactly how that show went, as she was "so nervous and excited."

"I remember the party. I don’t know how you felt, Idina, but I just needed the opening-night thing to happen," she told her former costar.

"I like an opening night a lot because the critics have gone already, so opening night is friends and family. I tend to have more fun," said Menzel. "Unfortunately, I think I always give a better performance then than the night when the reviewers are there, but whatever."

Delighting Wicked fans everywhere, a film adaptation of the Tony-winning musical — which is based on the 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire — is set to hit theaters next year, and was first announced all the way back in 2016.

The casting of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively, was revealed in November 2021, while Jon M. Chu was announced as director earlier that year.

"I love her so much; I've known her since she was 10," Chenoweth said about the casting of Grande, 30, as Glinda during a March 2022 appearance on the Today show. "I think that crown and wand are going to the exact correct person. And I think she's gonna nail it."

Grande and Erivo, 36, will be joined by Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Ethan Slater as Boq, Marissa Bode as Nessarose, Bowen Yang as Pfannee, Bronwyn James as ShenShen, Keala Settle as Miss Coddle, Aaron Teoh as Avaric and Colin Michael Carmichael as Professor Nikidi, according to IMDb.

Wicked: Part One is scheduled to hit theaters on Nov. 27, 2024, while Part Two is slated for release on Nov. 26, 2025, per IMDb.
