After sharing plans about spending their first divorced Thanksgiving together, it looks like Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler decided to take a rain check. Cavallari had a fun wine-fueled holiday with her BFF, hair colorist Justin Anderson, while Cutler took their three kids, sons Camden, 7, and Jaxon, 5, and daughter Saylor, 4, over to singer Carrie Underwood and husband Mike Fisher’s house to celebrate.

That’s a dramatic shift from what Cavallari was saying back in October when she told US Weekly that they were spending Turkey Day together because “it’s what’s best for the kids and we’re able to do that.” She felt that they were “in a solid enough place” and was “really thankful” they could put their differences aside.

Things were going so smoothly earlier this fall that the couple had planned the Thanksgiving Day menu a month in advance. She explained, “I think he’s gonna fry a turkey and smoke a lamb leg, and then I’m gonna do everything else.”

Their child custody agreement states that Cutler has their kids on even years for Thanksgiving, according to US Weekly. So the idea that Cavallari could join in on dad’s time was generous, especially in the painful first year of a divorce. The former couple appear to have given those plans a second thought and gone in a different direction.

Cavallari and Anderson celebrated the holiday by taking questions on Instagram stories after imbibing in a few adult beverages. The Uncommon James founder naturally was asked about her budding relationship with comedian Jeff Dye. The duo was spotted making out in a Chicago bar in October, but sources have said that it’s “nothing serious yet.”  Cavallari remained mum on the Instagram story about Dye, but Anderson joked, “No, we’re just good friends actually,” pretending to be the one dating the comedian.

Cutler spent a more family-oriented day at Underwood’s house. He shared a video with a huge array of food — turkey, mac and cheese and green bean casserole were prepared for the hungry adults and kids. At least one little impatient voice was heard in the background of the clip as an adult shushed them.

“We had it all. And when I say we, I mean @carrieunderwood and @mfisher1212. I watched a large turkey cook in a vat of oil. Carrie and Mike had enough for 20 people. Hope everyone had a great Turkey day.” captioned Cutler. Underwood posted a similar video thanking Cutler for providing the turkey and admitting she cooked for two days to get everything ready for the crew.

Even though Cavallari and Cutler didn’t spend the holiday together, they probably did what was best for them and their kids. That first year can be hard to navigate the drama and figure out how to smoothly co-parent their three children. In the end, it’s about finding happiness separately, but still making sure the kids are a priority.

“I met Jay when I was 23. I was a baby. Jay and I had so much love for each other, but we grew up,” she explained to People. “When you work at something for so many years and nothing’s changing, I think you have to just make a decision. We all want to be happy.”
