Kristen Wiig is embracing being a mom to her twins, Luna and Shiloh.

The Bridesmaids star and her husband, Avi Rothman, welcomed their children via surrogacy in January 2020.

“I'm very lucky about having these two babies and my husband," she shared during an appearance on The Howard Stern Show in 2021. "They make it all better, and it's changed my life."

In 2020, Wiig told InStyle that she and Rothman tried IVF for three years before exploring surrogacy, a decision that didn’t come lightly.

"I remember when our doctor mentioned going other routes and I was just like, 'Nope. Don't ever bring that up again. I'm getting pregnant. I'm doing this,' " she said. "I finally realized that I just needed help. And, thank God, we found the most amazing surrogate."

While she called her journey to motherhood “bittersweet,” she was also at peace with how things unfolded.

“Overall it was a very beautiful thing, and now that I’m on the other side, I wouldn’t have had it any other way,” Wiig said. “I’ve always believed that things happen the way they’re supposed to happen, and this is how [our babies] were supposed to get here.”

The Ghostbusters star has also opened up about how she changed after the births of Luna and Shiloh. "Just having these two other little beings that I get to take care of is so amazing and, even though it's hard, I feel more relaxed in a way," she told Entertainment Tonight in 2020. "I don't know why, but I had this sense of, like, calm after they were born."

Wiig and Rothman became a family of four with the arrival of their twins, Luna and Shiloh, in January 2020.

"It's the best," the Saturday Night Live alum told Entertainment Tonight in December of that year. "I know everyone always says that, and everyone says, like, it changes how you look at the world and how you, like, see love. Now it's just, like, such a bigger thing, and all of that stuff is so true."

Wiig hinted at her and Rothman’s new babies earlier that year when she returned to SNL as a host for their Mother’s Day "At Home" episode. During her monologue, she shared that she was thankful for all the things her mom taught her over the years, including preparing her “to be a mom myself.”

Wiig developed a close relationship with their surrogate

The Wonder Woman 1984 star opened up about becoming “really close” with her and Rothman’s surrogate, revealing it was also the surrogate’s first time going through the experience.

“We kind of went through everything together. When the children were born, I wanted to make sure she was OK and she wanted to make sure I was OK," Wiig told InStyle. "It was a lot of navigating through emotions and respecting that she had a connection with them and trying to be really honest about how I was feeling. Ultimately, I realized that I’m very fortunate. I’m grateful. I’m a different person now."

Wiig called her path to motherhood “bittersweet”

Wiig and Rothman spent three years undergoing IVF treatments in an effort to expand their family.

“Emotionally, spiritually and medically, it was probably the most difficult time in my life,” she told InStyle. “I wasn’t myself. There are so many emotions that go with it — you’re always waiting by the phone and getting test results, and it was just bad news after bad news. Occasionally there would be a good month, but then it was just more bad news. There was a lot of stress and heartache.”

While Wiig yearned to become a mother, she called her journey to motherhood “bittersweet."

“I was over the moon feeling them kick for the first time, but then I would get in my head and ask myself all these questions, like, ‘Why couldn’t I do this?’ At the same time I would tell myself it didn’t matter. She was giving us the greatest gift, and I just wanted them to get here!" Wiig added.

Their names were revealed in one of Wiig’s movies

While Wiig and Rothman lead a quiet life and keep their children out of the spotlight, their twins' names were seemingly revealed during the credits of her 2021 film, Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar.

In the "special thanks" acknowledgments, "Avi, Luna & Shiloh" were written before her costar and co-writer Annie Mumolo’s two children’s names: Grace and Vincent Lovestedt.

“It’s not a conscious choice to be secretive. I just want to exist in real life with my family, my friends and my dogs,” she told InStyle about her lifestyle, which includes not being on social media.

Wiig decided to get candid about her fertility journey after experiencing the “underground” nature of infertility.

“As private as I am and as sacred as this all is, what helped me was reading about other women who went through it and talking to those who have gone through IVF and fertility stuff," she told InStyle. "It can be the most isolating experience. But I’m trying to find that space where I can keep my privacy and also be there for someone else who may be going through it."

In retrospect, Wiig revealed she wished she had talked about her experience more and asked for more help during the process. “There’s such a support system out there!” she added.

She seemed to feel the same way when she spoke with The Hollywood Reporter in March 2024. Wiig admitted that going through IVF before finding a surrogate had been "such a struggle."

"When you go through it, you meet other people who are going through it, and it's almost like this secret little — the whispering conversation at a party. It feels like not a lot of people talk about it," she said.

"It is such a private thing, but maybe it doesn't have to be," she added. "It's part of my story and part of how I got my amazing family."

They gave Wiig a new perspective on life

Wiig told Entertainment Tonight about how her mindset shifted after welcoming her twins; in particular with her career.

"Especially being in this business, you're on your own a lot, and you make your own decisions. It can be very sort of, like, an isolated existence," the mother of two said. "Now that I have kids, it's like, 'Oh, I don't want this to be about me, I don't wanna think about me anymore.' "

While Luna and Shiloh’s mom is an Academy Award-nominated actress, Wiig revealed that her children take precedence over her career.

"Now that I have these two little ones, my mind is just not on work. Even if this global pandemic weren’t going on, I would want to be with my kids," she told Entertainment Tonight in 2020. "Obviously, some days I get more sleep than others, but it is what it is. And it’s frickin' awesome."

Wiig has also acknowledged the challenges of balancing being an actress and a mother.

"It's really hard because I'm always convinced they'll forget who I am if I'm gone for a day," she said while appearing on The Howard Stern Show. "I have looked at my children and been like, 'I am your mother.' "

On the show, she vowed that she would do her best to balance the two but that her children “will come first.”
