Apple TV+ is dipping its toes into the world of high society with its exciting new series “Palm Royale,” the first trailer for which dropped on Monday.

Loosely based on Juliet McDaniel’s novel “Mr. and Mrs. American Pie,” the series is set in 1969 and follows one woman’s attempt to cross the line between Palm Beach’s haves and have-nots, only to find herself in over her head. The show, which debuts with its first three episodes on Wednesday, March 20, features an all-star cast led by Kristen Wiig, Allison Janney and Laura Dern, with special guest appearances by legendary actors Carol Burnett and Bruce Dern

Wiig stars as Maxine Simmons, an ambitious newcomer who desperately wants to break into the city’s high society. Ground zero is the swanky and stylish Palm Royale, the city’s most exclusive club, so Maxine schemes to infiltrate its top circle, led by the powerful socialite Evelyn Rollins (Janney), who is “the woman to know in Palm Beach,” and Dinah Donahue (Leslie Bibb), a young ambassador’s wife who is slowly encroaching on Evelyn’s title. What Maxine soon finds, however, is that the price of admission to the world of the wealthy and elite is steeper than she realizes.

Speaking of the guiding principles behind the making of the show at the Television Critics Association winter press tour, showrunner and executive producer Abe Sylvia explained, “We wanted to make something that audiences could escape into … to build a world that people would want to visit and luxuriate in.”

The dramedy, which Sylvia described as “maximalist,” also features Ricky Martin, Josh Lucas, Amber Chardae Robinson, Mindy Cohn, Julia Duffy and Kaia Gerber.

“Palm Royale” premieres with its first three episodes on Wednesday, March 20 on Apple TV+. New episodes will be released weekly through May 8.
