Kristen Stewart has secured her next role following the release of Pablo Larraín's Princess Diana biopic, and it sounds like a very different project indeed.

Stewart – who will be seen later this year playing the late Princess of Wales in Spencer – has now joined the cast of Crimes of the Future, which has already signed up the likes of Lord of the Rings' Viggo Mortensen and James Bond's Léa Seydoux.

According to Deadline, Crimes of the Future will be written and directed by David Cronenberg, whose previous work includes earlier collaborations with Mortensen on A History of Violence and Eastern Promises, as well as Cosmopolis with Robert Pattinson.

The sci-fi thriller will be set in the "not-so-distant future", where humankind is adapting to its new, synthetic surroundings, leading to a state of metamorphosis and altered biological make-up.

"While some embrace the limitless potential of trans-humanism, others attempt to police it," the synopsis reads. "Either way, 'Accelerated Evolution Syndrome' is spreading fast."

Crimes of the Future will follow Saul Tenser, a performance artist who, after embracing Accelerated Evolution Syndrome, turns his ever-evolving body into a real-time theatre production alongside his partner Caprice.

When both the government and "a strange subculture" discover Tenser's work, the artist is "forced to consider what would be his most shocking performance of all".

For those waiting to see Kristen Stewart in something a little more, uh, grounded, Spencer is expected to premiere later this year.
