Kristen Stewart, Adam Sandler, Carey Mulligan, Cillian Murphy, Lena Dunham, Sebastian Stan, Amanda Seyfried & Rooney Mara On Course For Berlinale, Says Fest

The upcoming 74th Berlin Film Festival looks set to be its starriest edition in years with Kristen Stewart, Adam Sandler, Cillian Murphy, Lena Dunham, Sebastian Stan, Amanda Seyfried and Rooney Mara among the talent due to attend this year.

Artistic Director Carlo Chatrian confirmed the actors’ presence in an interview with Deadline following the festival’s official press conference on Monday.

“Yes. All the stars we have invited are expected to be here and have confirmed their presence,” he said, when quizzed on the above names. “I think the glamor aspect on the red carpet is a good one this year.”

Most are attending in movies due to be showcased in the Berlinale Special Gala line-up.

Stewart, who was at the festival last year as jury president, returns for the Berlinale Special Gala screening of Rose Glass’s Love Lies Bleeding alongside Katy O’Brian,  Ed Harris, Dave Franco and Jena Malone. The international premiere follows the film’s first outing at Sundance.

Oppenheimer star and Oscar best actor frontrunner Cillian Murphy will attend in Ireland-set opening film and Golden Bear contender Small Things Like These by Belgian director Tim Mielants.

Chatrian said the presence of Sandler and Mulligan had been confirmed by Netflix for the world premiere of Spaceman.

Mara is expected to accompany Competition title La Cocina by Alonso Ruizpalacios, alongside Mexican co-star Raúl Briones.

Amanda Seyfried will hit the Berlinale red carpet for the international premiere of Atom Egoyan’s Seven Veils, and Lena Dunham will attend the world premiere of Julia von Heinz’s Treasure, alongside Stephen Fry and veteran Polish Three Colours actor Zbigniew Zamachowski.

Chatrian also pointed to the attendance of Captain America star Sebastian Stan in Competition title A Different Man by U.S. director Aaron Schimberg, suggesting he might draw a younger crowd.

“It will be fun to see youngsters come to the cinema to watch him in another type of movie,” he said.

A raft of International stars are confirmed for the Competition screenings including France’s Isabelle Huppert in Hong Sangsoo’s A Traveler’s Needs; Camille Cottin and Fabrice Lucchini in Bruno Dumont’s The Empire; Gael Garcia Bernal, Renate Reinsve and Bérenice Bejo in Piero Messina’s Another End, Sidse Babett Knudsen in Gustav Möller’s Sons and Lars Eidinger’s in Matthias Glasner’s Dying, while Japanese star Tadanabu Asana (Thor, Mortel Combat) and acting veteran Masatoshi Nagase are expected for the world premiere of Gakuryu Ishii’s The Box Man in the Berlinale Special line-up.

Directorial star wattage will be provided by Martin Scorsese who be feted with the Berlinale Honorary Golden Bear in a ceremony on February 10.
