Korea Box Office: ‘Luck-Key’ Dominates Quiet Weekend

Opening on Wednesday (Oct. 13), local comedy “Luck-key” debuted on top of the South Korean box office. The Showbox release earned $14.7 million from 2.02 million admissions between Thursday and Sunday, accounting for 68% of total weekend box office revenue. Starring Yoo Hae-jin (“Veteran”) in the lead, “Luck-key” is a Korean-language adaptation of 2012 Japanese film “Key of Life.”

Fox’s “Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children” and UPI’s “Don’t Breathe” slipped to second and third places respectively. “Miss Peregrine” $1.98 million between Friday and Sunday, for a total of $17.6 million after three weekends on release. “Breathe” earned $1.23 million for a total of $6.63 million after two weekends.

Another UPI release, “Bridget Jones’s Baby” held fourth place, earning $438,000 for a cumulative of $5.43 million after two weekends.

Debuting on Oct. 13 and handled by Lotte Entertainment, “Bastille Day” scored $498,000 between Wednesday and Sunday. Warner Bros.’s “Accountant” added up $346,000 over the same period.

Local documentary “Spy Nation” earned $404,000 over five days. Premiered at the Jeonju film festival, “Nation” probes Korea’s National Intelligence Service agency’s fabrication of espionage charges.
