Korea Box Office: ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Dominates Opening Weekend
Opening on Wednesday, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” debuted on top of the Korean box office. The Warner Bros. release scored $14.1 million from 1.94 million admissions between Wednesday and Sunday and accounted for 68% of the total weekend box office. Its opening was stronger than all the original “Harry Potter” movies debuts in Korea.
Local fantasy drama “Vanishing Time: A Boy Who Returned,” which also opened on Wednesday, earned $2.37 million over five days. Starring top actor Gang Dong-won and rising actress Shin Eun-soo, the Showbox release sees a teenage girl, whose friends all mysteriously disappear, run into a man who claims to be her-long lost friend.
“Doctor Strange” slipped to third from the previous week’s top spot, earning $1.35 million between Friday and Sunday for a total of $38.4 million after two weekends on release.
In its second weekend, Korean sports action drama “Split” earned $685,000 for a total of $4.6 million after two weekends. Showbox’s long-running comedy “Luck-key” earned $346,000 and extended its total to $47.4 million after six weekends.
UPI’s “Oija: Origin of Evil” dropped to sixth, earning $266,000 for a total of $2.11 million after two weekends.
