Kool April Nites on Wednesday: Show and shines dazzle, Foothill takes stage, drive-in open

Kool April Nites week continues Wednesday, April 24, with a classic drive-in movie, a musical production on the Redding Civic Auditorium stage and show and shines at Shasta County businesses.

The Civic turns into an outdoor theater when C.R. Gibbs American Grille hosts the Kool April Nites Drive-In Movie Night at 8 p.m. at 700 Auditorium Drive.

Park on the lawn to watch the 1969 classic car-themed comedy film, Walt Disney's "Herbie, the Love Bug." Race car driver Jim Douglas (Dean Jones) credits his mad driving skills for his sudden winning streak, until he realizes his sentient car, Herbie, is the real source of his success.

Classic car drivers may park for the movie at 7 p.m., while other vehicles may park at 7:30 p.m. People on foot are welcome. Guests are welcome to spread out a picnic blanket or bring lawn chairs, according to Kool April Nites President Debra Fox.

This film is rated G and families are welcome.

Admission is free.

Dine before the drive-in with Foothill's Club Cougar

Grab dinner with the Foothill High School Club Cougar Orchestra before you go to the drive in, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Civic.

Students perform a singing and dancing variety program while guests dine on meals catered by O’Dell’s Craft Barbecue.

Rick Darting of Redding bought his 1970 Camaro SS in 2014. Since he's fixed it up, the car won 'Best Muscle Car' at the Anderson River Park Show and Shine in 2022. When he drives it, "it gets a lot of looks" and "thumbs up" gestures from onlookers, Darting said. See this car in the stock car competition during the Kool April Nites show on Saturday, April 27, 2024 at the Redding Civic Auditorium lawn.

Today's show and shines ― featuring classic cars on display ― are all at Redding businesses. These events also feature food trucks or booths and entertainment.

  • Orchard Nutrition Center from 9 a.m. to noon at 121 Locust St. This event includes a barbecue brunch. For more information call 530-244-9600.

  • Redding Paint Mart and Interstate Batteries from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 2330 Larkspur Lane. There will also be a lunch and music by Jimmy Limo. For more information call 530-221-7688.

  • Redding Motorsports Park (Redding Dragstrip) from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at 6750 Old Oregon Trail. The park will also host a skid pit and its Street Machine Grudge Racing event during the show and shine. For more information call 530-215-3003.
