‘Kokomo City’ Leads 2024 Cinema Eye Honors Nominations: See Full List

The 2024 Cinema Eye Honors has officially announced its full list of nominees, with D. Smith’s debut feature “Kokomo City” topping the awards contenders.

The Sundance breakout film about Black trans sex workers has six nominations for the 17th annual awards ceremony which spotlights achievements in nonfiction and documentary films and series. The 2024 Cinema Eye Honors will take place January 12 at the New York Academy of Medicine in East Harlem, New York.

Following “Kokomo City” are Mstyslav Chernov’s “20 Days in Mariupol,” Sam Green’s “32 Sounds,” and Maite Alberdi’s “The Eternal Memory,” each with five nominations. All four films are nominated for Outstanding Nonfiction Feature with the respective directors all nominated for Outstanding Direction.

This year’s Cinema Eye Honors also marks a history-making first with directors Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson being the first filmmakers to be nominated for Nonfiction Feature and Nonfiction Short in the same year, showing up in the latter category for their ESPN short “Black Girls Play: The Story of Hand Games.” “American Symphony” helmer Matthew Heineman additionally is in third place of total Cinema Eye nominations of all time behind Steve James and Laura Poitras.

Returning Cinema Eye Honors winner Philip Glass is nominated for in the Original Score category for “The Pigeon Tunnel” alongside musician Paul Leonard-Morgan.

Netflix leads all distributors with a total of 11 nominations, followed by 10 nominations for Magnolia Pictures, eight for National Geographic, and seven each for HBO and Hulu.

Earlier this year, Cinema Eye announced a long list of 20 films for the Audience Choice Prize and opened voting to the public. In the greatest response the category has ever seen, more than 110,000 votes were cast by documentary film fans from across the globe. The select Shorts List films will have a special screening November 19 at DCTV in New York City. The official Cinema Eye Week kicks off January 9, with the ceremony held January 12.

Historically, films nominated for Cinema Eye will often go on to receive other nominations and critics prizes. Over the last five years, 92 percent of the Oscar nominees for Documentary Feature were also Cinema Eye nominees.
