Season 2 of Yellowjackets gave viewers way more questions than answers, as the Showtime hit continued to build the decades-long mystery surrounding the team's time in the wilderness. The new episodes saw the teens facing brutal hardship in the rough winter, including their first steps into cannibalism and the loss of Shauna's baby. In present day, Shauna's family reeled from the aftermath of her lover Adam's death, as the show introduced introduced adult versions of Lottie and Van. The finale leaves both then teen and adult characters reeling from major tragedies, facing whatever may come next.

The series received its third season renewal way back in December 2022, but it will still take a while for new episodes to arrive. Here's what we know about season 3 so far.

Production has halted due to the writers' strike.

On May 2, co-creator Ashley Lyle gave a production update on Twitter, revealing that the writers' room for season 3 only met for a day before the WGA strike went into effect.

"Well, we had exactly one day in the #YellowJackets S3 writers’ room. It was amazing, and creatively invigorating, and so much fun, and I’m very excited to get back to it as soon as the #WGA gets a fair deal. #1u #unionstrong," Lyle wrote.

One member of the core adult cast may be leaving the series.

Warning: spoilers ahead. The season 2 finale included tragic twists for both the young and adult timelines. In the wilderness, the teens were no longer starving after sacrificing Javi, but their cabin burns down at the end of the episode, leaving them with no shelter in the ongoing winter (and Coach Ben nowhere to be found). Meanwhile, the present-day hunt ritual ends with Misty accidentally killing Natalie.

There's been no word yet of whether Juliette Lewis will continue on with the series in some capacity, as it's only been a day since the finale hit streaming. Lewis could possibly appear in flashback or dream sequences in future episodes, but for now the adult Yellowjackets are down to five, with Melanie Lynskey (Shauna), Christina Ricci (Misty), Tawny Cypress (Taissa) most likely to return. We've yet to see if new additions Simone Kessell (Lottie) and Lauren Ambrose (Van) will return for season 3, but we have high hopes.

All of the team cast members are also likely to return, including Sophie Nélisse (teen Shauna), Sophie Thatcher (teen Natalie), Samantha Hanratty (teen Misty), Jasmin Savoy Brown (teen Taissa), Courtney Eaton (teen Lottie), Liv Hewson (teen Van), and Kevin Alves (Travis). Other highly-anticipated returning cast include Steven Krueger (Coach Ben), Warren Kole (Jeff), Sarah Desjardins (Callie), Kevin Alves (Travis), and Elijah Wood (Walter).

Yellowjackets is "still on track" for a five-season run.

Ahead of the season 2 premiere, Lyle told Entertainment Weekly that she and co-creator Bart Nickerson have plans for the show to last five seasons, adding that they're "still on track for that." She said "there's always room for things," but clarified that she and the team "don't really see this as being more than a five-season show."

She continued, "I think that there are shows that can go forever, but I think that when you're telling such a deeply serialized story and it's about these characters' lives, you want to reach a satisfying conclusion and not just drag things out forever. This isn't really one of those setup shows where it can go anywhere. So far, we've been really on track. Season 2 is largely what we always planned, but you do make a lot of discoveries along the way and so it's always a little bit surprising."
