‘I Know Your Soul’ Trailer: ‘Quo Vadis, Aida?’ Filmmaker Jasmila Žbanić Creates a Chilling Legal Thriller Series

Oscar-nominated director Jasmila Žbanić reunites with her “Quo Vadis, Aida?” actress Jasna Đuričić for a psychological legal drama “I Know Your Soul,” premiering Out of Competition at the Venice Film Festival.

IndieWire can exclusively share the trailer for the series, produced by Beta Films. Žbanić serves as showrunner for the six-part limited series that portrays prosecutor Nevena Murtezic’s (Đuričić) investigation into a suicide that threatens to destroy her family and career when she discovers she may not know her son Dino (Lazar Dragojević) as well as she thought. The case of a teen’s suicide triggers an avalanche of events in her professional and private life, as she finds it increasingly difficult to balance the needs of her son with a job that is under constant public and political pressure.

The Bosnian-based drama was produced by Deblokada for Telecom Bosnia and Herzegovina. “I Know Your Soul” joins the growing international slate from Beta Films as part of the company’s initiative to co-finance and co-produce more projects in the Central and East European region, including the Serbian supernatural drama “Block 27” and the Czech crime series “Ultimatum.”

“I Know Your Soul” is created by Žbanić and Damir Ibrahimović and directed by Alen Drjević and Nermin Hamzagić. Lead star Đuričić previously won critical acclaim for starring in Žbanić’s “Quo Vadis, Aida?,” which premiered at Venice in 2020 and was later Oscar-nominated for Best International Feature.

“Quo Vadis, Aida?” focused on the mass killing of Muslim men in Srebrenica amid the Bosnian War in the 1990s. Đuričić won a European Film Award for portraying U.N. translator in Srebrenica trying to save her family.

Žbanić made her feature directorial debut with “Grbavica: Land of My Dreams” following a widow and her young daughter in war-torn Sarajevo; the film went on to win the Golden Bear at Berlinale in 2006. Žbanić most recently helmed an episode of HBO hit series “The Last of Us.”

Žbanić previously told IndieWire that she could relate to the post-apocalyptic tone of “The Last of Us” coming from making war films. “This episode was very important for me because I felt a lot of similarities with what I experienced in war,” Žbanić said. “Sarajevo was like a Jackson in a way, surrounded by enemies. People inside had to somehow go on with life, find a way how to produce electricity and food. All of that made me very much attached to Jackson. I didn’t know the game before I started, but after I watched it, after I researched everything, I felt, ‘Oh, I know Jackson very well.’”

She continued, “I believe that life will go on. Even in the worst circumstances, people will find a way to make a society. An especially successful society is a society based on solidarity. I was witness to it. During the war, I had a feeling that people were much kinder to each other in Sarajevo. They didn’t care about materialistic stuff, many things that now we care about. We were all equal, because we had nothing. There are different ways of organizing society, but this one proved to be successful. So I was really happy that Jackson was portrayed in this way, and that it gives hope.”
