Nearly one month after the body of former NFL player Sergio Brown’s mother was found, Brown has been arrested in connection with her death, according to the Maywood Police Department in Illinois.

In a media release, police said that Sergio was taken into custody in San Diego, Calif., while "re-entering" the United States after being in Mexico and "is awaiting extradition to Maywood ... to face charges of First-Degree Murder."

Myrtle Brown, 73, was found dead in Maywood on the same day she and her son were reported missing.

Days later, Sergio, 35 — who last played for the Buffalo Bills in 2016 — posted bizarre videos making claims about “fake news” and rapping cryptic Drake lyrics about dying, while family members have spoken out about the tragedy.

Here is everything we know so far about Myrtle's death and Sergio's recent arrest:

Sept. 16: Myrtle Found Dead, Sergio Reported Missing

Sergio and Myrtle were both reported missing Saturday, Sept. 16, local police said in a statement obtained by NBC Chicago.

Later that day, Myrtle was found unresponsive in a creek less than 100 yards from her home, according to CBS News.

"Currently the Maywood Police Department is attempting to locate Mr. Sergio Brown," the police statement said at the time.

Nick Brown, Myrtle’s other son and Sergio’s brother, posted a tribute on Facebook to his mother and implored his brother to return home.

“Mom, thank you for being strong, caring, diligent, fancy, funny, and for saving my art," the post reads. "I won’t let you down. My brother Sergio is still missing. If anyone knows where he is I want him to know that I love you and please come home.”

Myrtle's Death Ruled a Homicide

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said the following day that Myrtle was killed by "multiple injuries due to assault."

Her death was listed as a homicide.

Myrtle’s next-door neighbor told CBS News that family members allegedly told him that Sergio “wasn't himself the last few months. He was out of his mind.”

Sergio's Aunt Speaks Out

Sheila Simmons, Myrtle’s sister and Sergio’s aunt, spoke to WGN9, saying she had last heard from her sister the Thursday before her death.

Simmons found out her sister was missing early Saturday morning — the day she was found dead — before later finding out about her death.

“We’re going to find out what happened because it’s not normal for my sister to not answer her phone, not to respond to text messages,” Simmons told WGN about the days before Myrtle’s death. “People have been reaching out to her since Friday. No one was able to reach her.”

Simmons said she went to Myrtle’s home in Maywood after finding out she was missing and noticed that things seemed “out of the ordinary,” the outlet reports.

Sergio Appears in 2 Bizarre Videos

Days after Myrtle's remains were discovered, a video posted on the Instagram account “intplayerwithapassport” opens with Sergio saying “fake news.” (As of Wednesday, the Instagram account is no longer available.)

Though Sergio didn’t directly mention his mother’s death in the video, he says “it has to be the FBI,” and said that he had been visited by the bureau on “Bob Marley’s death day.”

Sergio also claimed that the Maywood Police Department “kidnapped” him twice, before saying “it had to be the FBI or Maywood PD,” without specifying what “it” was referring to.

In the now-deleted video, Sergio also claimed he thought his mother was “on vacation.”

A second video posted to the same account featured Sergio singing a Drake song with lyrics about death.

“Oh my god, oh my god, if I die, I’m a legend,” Sergio sings in the video.

PEOPLE could not verify if the account “intplayerwithapassport” belonged to Sergio, but before the account disappeared, it had posted pictures of the former NFL player dating back to 2021.
