What to know about ABC's 'Golden Bachelor' set to premiere this fall

ABC’s “The Bachelor” franchise is ready to test the theory that it's never too late to find love with its newest reality dating television venture “The Golden Bachelor".

The spinoff series follows 72-year-old Gerry Turner as he looks for his perfect match among a group of women both wise and wonderful.

Warner Brothers and ABC, the studio executives behind the project, are betting on viewers' interest to see a new kind of love story develop on their screens come fall.

What is The Golden Bachelor?

Rather than centering the show around a twentysomething’s search for love like the other Bachelor shows, the Golden Bachelor has cast an older gentleman as lead.

A 40 second teaser video posted on the Bachelor Nation YouTube channel introduces a man named Gerry as the first Golden Bachelor.

Viewers will follow an older single man on his search for a partner to spend his sunset years with. The women expected to participate have lived through “love, loss and laughter with the hope of igniting a future full of endless possibilities,” according to ABC.

If you're interested in being cast on the show, the show’s producers are looking for active and outgoing senior citizens looking for a committed relationship. Senior citizens are generally described as anyone who is 65 years or older.

Who is the Golden Bachelor?

The Golden Bachelor’s leading man is none other than 71-year-old widower Gerry Turner, ABC announced July 17. He has lived on a lakeside property in Hudson, Indiana for the last six years, but is originally from Iowa.

Turner is a retired restaurateur who married his high school sweetheart Toni in 1974. Toni died suddenly in 2017 after 43 years of marriage. The couple shared two daughters and two granddaughters.

Now, Turner is ready to re-enter the dating scene and "find a love that will stand the test of time in his golden years," according to ABC’s announcement.

When will The Golden Bachelor premiere?

The "Golden Bachelor" will premiere on Sept. 28 with hourlong episodes every Thursday night at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. Next day streaming will be available on Hulu.
