Knives Out, Parasite among Writers Guild Awards nominees
The Writers Guild of America released the nominees for its annual awards on Monday, providing a list that looks much different from the screenplay nominees at the Golden Globes this past Sunday.
In the Original Screenplay category, Oscar frontrunners like Marriage Story and Parasite are joined by crowd favorites like Knives Out and Booksmart. Meanwhile, the Adapted Screenplay nominees range from Joker to Little Women.
Noticeably absent from the nominees is Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which director Quentin Tarantino just won a Golden Globe award for writing. The movie was ineligible for the Writers Guild Awards, along with films like The Farewell and Pain and Glory, for not being made under the guild’s watch while adhering to the WGA’s Minimum Basic Agreement bargaining accord.
Two awards hopefuls that were eligible for the Writers Guild Awards but did not receive a nomination were The Two Popes and Hustlers. Both were submitted to the Original Screenplay category, but will be campaigning in the Best Adapted Screenplay arena for the Academy Awards.
The 2020 Writers Guild Awards will take place during concurrent ceremonies in New York City and Los Angeles on Feb. 1. See the full list of film nominations below.
