Kit Harington to Reprise Jon Snow in Game of Thrones Sequel Series

The legend of Jon Snow has yet to be fully told. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kit Harington has signed on to reprise the character in an upcoming Game of Thrones sequel series.
It’s the first known Game of Thrones spin-off series that’ll take place after the events of the original series. In the case of Jon Snow’s character, he was last seen heading North of the Wall after killing Daenerys Targaryen.
Needless to say, the news is surprising for a variety of reasons. For one, HBO programming president Casey Bloys previously ruled out a spin-off series featuring the original GoT stars. “Nope, nope, nope. No. Part of it is, I do want this show — this Game of Thrones, [David Benioff and D.B. Weiss]’s show — to be its own thing. I don’t want to take characters from this world that they did beautifully and put them off into another world with someone else creating it,” Boys told The Hollywood Reporter in 2019. “George [R.R. Martin] has a massive, massive world; there are so many ways in. That’s why we’re trying to do things that feel distinct — and to not try and redo the same show. That’s probably one of the reasons why, right now, a sequel or picking up any of the other characters doesn’t make sense for us.”
What’s more, Harington has been vocal about the toll playing Jon Snow had on his mental health, which ultimately led him to check into rehab in 2019. “I went through some mental health difficulties after Thrones, and during the end of Thrones, to be honest,” he said in a 2021 interview with SiriusXM. “I think it was directly due to the nature of the show and what I had been doing for years.”
The Jon Snow project is the seventh known Game of Thrones spin-off series in development at HBO. House of the Dragon, a prequel centered on the House Targaryen, is set to premiere on August 21st. Other projects include The Sea of Snake, about Lord Corlys Velaryon; 10,000 Ships, about warrior queen Princess Nymeria; A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on Martin’s fantasy novels Tales of Dunk and Egg; and a dramatic animated series called The Golden Empire.
