Kirsten Dunst's latest project she worked on with her husband, Jesse Plemons, may have been the craziest.

Dunst, 41, stars in Civil War as a photojournalist named Lee documenting a modern civil war in the United States. Plemons, 36, makes an appearance in the film as a soldier who confronts and threatens Dunst's character and her colleagues as they travel through the country.

Trailers for the film have teased the tense moment, and Dunst recently told Entertainment Tonight that her husband "wouldn't play a part like this" normally. "He did a favor for us because that is a really disturbing role to play, so it's not like he was jumping at the chance to play the role," Dunst said of Plemons, whom she has been married to since 2022.

She added, "Even reading the script, it's one of the craziest things I've ever seen. When we rolled up to set, it was just very, very tense and emotional for everybody filming that scene."

Dunst's Civil War other costars include Cailee Spaeny, Wagner Moura and Stephen McKinley Henderson, whom she told the outlet were shooting another scene while she and Plemons rehearsed for their on-screen confrontation.

"We shot it for two days straight," she said, noting that the scene "was very intense" in part due to filmmaker Alex Garland's decision to hold camera crews back from creating close-up shots. "He sort of did it in a nontraditional way to make sure that he wasn't breaking up the momentum, and he didn't do traditional close-ups where you had crews stepping in," she continued. "So it almost felt really immersive. The whole movie [does] but [especially] that scene in particular."

Civil War, meanwhile, marks the third time the married couple have worked together. They originally met while playing a couple on the FX series Fargo. In 2021, Dunst and Plemons costarred in The Power of the Dog, a Western film that earned them both Academy Award nominations at the 94th Oscars.

Dunst and Plemons share two children: Ennis, 5, and James, who turns 3 in April.

The Marie Antoinette star recently told Marie Claire that despite her and Plemons' experience working together, they often choose not to interact while on set and in character. "Because we fell in love on a set, we fell in love creatively first. I think we'll always come back to that, in a very not-involving-our-real-life way," she said. "And also, listen, we don't talk to each other on set. I left him alone, he left me alone."
