Actors Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons are raising two sons

From Hollywood to parenthood, Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons are pros at working together.

The couple — who met on the set of Fargo in 2015 — share two children: sons Ennis, 5, and James, 3. Shortly before welcoming her first child in 2018, Dunst opened up about her desire to become a mom.

“I wasn’t one of those ‘I need a baby!’ people until my goddaughter was born,” she told Marie Claire UK in 2017. “I love her so much. That love is just like ... you can’t experience that unless you have a kid. I put her to bed last night and she woke up this morning and said to her mom, ‘Where’s Kiki?’ I just love that love. That’s what I want.”

Not long after Ennis’ arrival, Dunst returned to work on the TV series On Becoming a God in Central Florida.

“I’m just tired all the time,” the Bring It On actress told reporters at the Television Critics Association Summer 2019 Press Tour while promoting the series. “Also doing the show too, it’s so much easier to go back to work than it is to be a stay at home mom,” she added. “I was like, ‘bye’ to my mother-in-law [who watches her son while she’s at work]! I was like, [phew!]”

In 2021, the couple welcomed their second son, James. Dunst — who stars in the 2024 film Civil War with Plemons — opened up about how being a mother of two changed the roles she was willing to take on.

"I don't want to take my kid out of school for a role unless I cannot say no and it's that incredible," she told Marie Claire UK in 2024. "I just don't want to do that to him."

Plemons has also shared about the impacts of fatherhood on his life. “It's the best, man. It's so hard to put into words. All the cliches are true, what every parent tells you,” he told GQ in 2019.

Ennis Howard Plemons, 5

Dunst and Plemons welcomed their first child, Ennis Howard, on May 3, 2018, in Santa Monica, Calif. The Power of a Dog actress confirmed she was expecting her and Plemons’ first child by debuting her bump in an ad campaign for Rodante earlier that year.

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2019, Dunst shed light on how she and Plemons landed on their firstborn’s moniker, which she referred to as “an old cowboy name.”

“We found it online. You know, on those baby websites where you just keep scrolling. We were like, ‘We like that. It sounds cool,’ ” she shared.

Ennis made his red carpet debut at 1 year old while attending Dunst’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony. While he has gotten a taste for the limelight as a toddler, the actress shared that she and Plemons are going to encourage him to wait before trying his hand at working in the industry.

“If you have a kid who’s very cute, I get why people do it. Do a Gap ad and you can make your college money. It’s the first time I kind of understand it,” she told PorterEdit in 2019. “Ennis is so adorable, with two big dimples. He is such a happy baby, and I see why I might want that memento of him at this age, but we will probably just encourage him to do school plays.”

Now 5 years old, Ennis is in kindergarten — and Jimmy Kimmel's son Billy is his classmate. During an April 2024 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the Civil War actress shared that Ennis and Billy recently got into a disagreement at school over an empty chair.

“I heard in our parent-teacher conference. Ms. Julie told me about it,” Dunst told Kimmel about their son's fight. “I know that Billy was sitting in a chair and Ennis then went to sharpen a pencil or something. Came back, saw there was an empty chair and sat in it, and Billy came back and was mad that Ennis was in his chair.”

Kimmel replied, “I heard a similar story that Billy got up to sharpen a pencil ... and then there was a displacement there and they both cried."

James Robert Plemons, 3

Dunst and Plemons welcomed their second son, James Robert, in April 2021. The actress revealed she was expecting her second child one month earlier by proudly displaying her baby bump on the cover of W Magazine. However, Dunst and Plemons didn't confirm James' birth until September.

"This is the newest guy, the Big Kahuna," Dunst shared in an interview with The New York Times, four months after welcoming James. "He's an angel, but he's a hungry angel. And a heavy angel," she added of her then-18-pound son.

James’ arrival not only made Dunst and Plemons parents of two but also Ennis a big brother — a role he proudly took on.

“It’s so, so wild and wonderful to see our eldest son with him, you know. It’s hard to put into words, other than just like very, very cheesy words,” Plemons told GQ UK in November 2021. “But it’s so beautiful, and he’s been so understanding, with us dividing our attention. He had a few little slip-ups, but that’s to be expected, you know?”

While appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! months after giving birth, Dunst echoed her husband’s sentiment, revealing her younger son looks up to Ennis.

"All he wants to do is bounce, walk, be like his brother and walk around," she said. "He just wants to walk and run, he doesn't even know what crawling is."

As he’s ventured into toddlerhood, James appears to be a Marvel fan as Dunst posted a photo of him holding a Spider-Man umbrella in September 2023. However, according to Dunst, he doesn't care that his mother played MJ in the 2002 film.

“Jimmy doesn’t care. I think because I have red hair, but Jimmy just wants to watch the wrestling scene over and over again in Spider-Man 1," Dunst told Kimmel of her younger son in April 2024. "Jimmy’s like psh psh psh,” she added, mimicking Spider-Man as he shoots out his webs. “All around the house.”

Later on, Dunst joked that James — who they call Jimmy when he is "bad" — is "out of control."

“He’s just hilarious. He is. He’s just like a crazy little dude,” she shared. “I’m afraid for little Jimmy to go to school to be honest."
