Kirsten Dunst and Daniel Brühl Join The Entertainment System Is Down Cast

Ruben Östlund, whose satire movie Triangle of Sadness earned three Oscar nominations, has another satire coming up called The Entertainment System is Done. In April, we knew in terms of casting that Keanu Reeves was in talks to join the new movie. Now according to Deadline, Kirsten Dunst and Daniel Brühl have also joined the cast.

Triangle of Sadness already blew critics and audiences away about a luxury cruise fighting for survival on a deserted island. Ruben Östlund’s next satire will actually take place on a plane this time. We were already excited to hear Keanu Reeves will take part in this upcoming project.

Kirsten Dunst has played a vampire in Interview with a Vampire, a cheerleader in Bring it On, and Peter Parker’s love interest in Spider-Man. In 2022, Dunst received recognition from The Academy with her first Oscar nomination for The Power of the Dog. Just when the Marie Antoinette star told Marie Claire her Oscar-nominated role gave her “the sad mom” typecast, those particular roles went right out the window after starring in Civil War playing a photojournalist who regularly covers war zones.

Daniel Brühl introduced himself to mainstream audiences by playing a Nazi German war hero in Inglourious Basterds. He gained further recognition and critical acclaim playing Niki Lauda in Rush, scoring many nominations including a Golden Globe. He’s also been in Marvel projects portraying Helmut Zemo in Captain America: Civil War and the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

There’s no word yet on what characters these two stars will play.

What Do We Know So Far About The Entertainment System is Down?

As the title of Ruben Östlund’s latest movie predicts, the plot follows the entertainment system failing to work on a long-haul flight. Passengers will experience the relatable horror of boredom thousands of feet up in the air.

The Entertainment System is Down took inspiration from Virginia University’s real psychology experiment called “The Challenge of the Disengaged Mind.” Participants weren’t happy spending 6-15 minutes in a room by themselves with nothing to do. The experiment pushed the limits by letting participants choose to touch a button to deliver a harmless yet painful electric shock. If you can believe it, a quarter of all women and two-thirds of all men pressed the button. Even one man gave himself 190 electric shocks.

Ruben Östlund’s upcoming satire makes me wonder what limits the characters in The Entertainment System is Down will take. Shooting is scheduled to take place in early 2025.
