King and Queen of Bhutan Announce Baby Daughter's Royal Name 3 Months After Her Birth

The couple also shared the first photos of their baby daughter, who was born in September

Introducing Bhutan’s new little princess!

Over the weekend, Queen Jetsun Pema and King Jigme Khesar of Bhutan announced the name of their newborn daughter on social media. The royal couple welcomed their third child on Sept. 9 and shared her name with the world after a special Buddhist naming on Saturday.

“Her Royal Highness the Gyalsem has been named Sonam Yangden Wangchuck,” the Queen, 33, and King, 43, announced in coordinating posts on Instagram, sharing a photo of the sleeping newborn snuggled up in a floral blanket.

“Sonam is a Bhutanese name denoting merit, longevity and good fortune. The name Yangden, meaning precious jewel, signifies prosperity and wellbeing,” the post read. Wangchuck, meanwhile, is the family’s dynastic name; in Bhutan, only members of the royal family have traditional surnames.

The news came with the first photos of Sonam that have been shared with the world, as the proud mom and dad posted two carousels loaded with pictures from the traditional naming ceremony. The new baby joins big brothers Prince Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel, 7, who is known as the Dragon Prince as his father's heir, and Prince Jigme Ugyen Wangchuck, 3, who looked adoringly at their baby sister during the service. Like their new sibling, their names were not announced until their naming ceremonies were held a few months after their birth.

Sonam’s naming ceremony took place at the Tashichhodzong monastery on a special date — the 17th anniversary of her father’s accession to the Golden Throne — and was attended by members of the Bhutanese royal family.

King Jigme Khesar, 43, proudly held his daughter in one shot, and cameras also captured the little princes sharing a sweet hug. Jigme became King upon the abdication of his father King Jigme Singye in 2006, and the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, as he is known, attended Sonam’s naming ceremony along with the Queen Mothers.

Despite her royal birth, baby Sonam could potentially be displaced in the line of succession by a younger brother. The constitution dictates that princes take precedence over princesses in the line of succession to the Golden Throne of Bhutan.

In June, King Jigme and Queen Jestun shared the happy news that they were expecting their third child.

"Their Majesties, The Druk Gyalpo and Gyaltsuen are happy to share the news that Her Majesty is expecting their third child, due in early autumn," the Instagram announcement shared by both the King and Queen read. "Their majesties wish to thank everyone for their continued good wishes and prayers."

The royal couple later announced the royal baby's birth in a modern way — on Instagram! — but kept her name mum, as they did with their sons.

“We are honoured to share the wonderful news that a healthy baby girl has been born to Their Majesties, The Druk Gyalpo and Gyaltsuen today, coinciding with the 25th day of the 7th month of the Female Water Rabbit Year, in Lingkana Palace, Thimphu,” the message read.

“Both Her Majesty and the Royal baby are doing well,” it continued. “Their Majesties extend their heartfelt gratitude to the medical team of dedicated doctors and nurses, the Zhung Dratshang for all the prayers conducted and to everyone for their well wishes.”

Jigme and Jetsun tied the knot in October 2011 and are known as the "Will and Kate of the Himalayas” as they carry out similar ceremonial roles and diplomatic duties.

Taking the nickname full circle, the royals attended the coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla in London on May 6, and Queen Jetsun hit the road again to attend the epic royal wedding of Crown Prince Hussein of Jordan to Rajwa Alseif on June 1, which William and Kate were also at.
