King Felipe of Spain has spoken for the first time since his mother Queen Sofia was hospitalized.

On Wednesday, the King of Spain, 56, shared the update while leaving the Ruber International Hospital in Madrid, where his 85-year-old mother was reportedly admitted for a urinary tract infection on April 9.

"She is very well, cheerful and eager to be discharged and return as soon as possible," King Felipe told the media from his car, Hola! reported.

According to ABC Spain, the monarch had already spent time with his mom at the hospital when she entered the previous day. Citing palace reports, the outlet said that Queen Sofia’s condition was "very rapid and favorable" and that she was "under observation," per a translation.

The former Queen of Spain was out in Madrid the day before she entered the hospital to attend the mass honoring Fernando Gomez-Acebo at the Iglesia del Sacramento, the Cathedral Church of the Armed Forces of Madrid. Queen Sofia paid her respects at the service for the late nephew of her husband, the former King Juan Carlos, which her son King Felipe and his wife Queen Letizia also attended.

On April 6, the former Queen Sofia was also photographed heading to the wedding of Teresa Urquijo, the granddaughter of Princess Teresa of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, to José Luis Martínez-Almeida, the mayor of Madrid.

Queen Sofia is said to have incredible health and was reportedly most recently hospitalized when she gave birth to the future King Felipe in 1968, according to Euro Weekly News. Sofia and Juan Carlos were already parents to daughters Princess Elena and Princess Cristina, but the sisters were bumped from their spots in the Spanish line of succession as they follow male-preference cognatic primogeniture.

King Felipe acceded the throne in 2014 at age 46 upon the abdication of his father, King Juan Carlos. The former monarch left Spain under a cloud of scandal amid allegations of tax fraud and money laundering. Juan Carlos, who was once revered for his role in his country's transition to democracy, stepped down in favor of his son, who has since kept a distance from his dad in public settings.

King Felipe and Queen Letizia share two daughters, Princess Leonor, 18, and Princess Sofia, 16, and Leonor follows her father in the line of succession to the throne because she has no brothers. The princess is currently in her three-year military training, as is custom for the heir to the Spanish throne, and is completing courses at the General Military Academy of Zaragoza.
