For King & Country discuss film ‘Unsung Hero’ focused on family, faith

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A movie based on a true story about family and faith is set to hit theaters nationwide later this month.

“Unsung Hero” is based on the life of David Smallbone, father of the Christian pop duo For King & Country, composed of Australian brothers Joel and Luke Smallbone.

The brothers joined the News 2 studio to discuss the movie, which had its pre-premiere weekend in Nashville on April 19-21.

“This is our parents’ migration story,” said Joel, who played his father in the film. “It’s really a family film. It’s a story about a mom, six kids and her husband who lost everything in Australia, moving continents and arriving only to lose his job once again… and sort of rising up out of that, and through that story came our sister Rebecca St. James. Ultimately, we were able to live out, in some ways, the American dream.”

Luke, who also had a hand in producing the movie, said the film made him realize how close his family stayed together despite the challenges they faced.

“If you take us back to the beginnings of really what this story is talking about, we raked leaves, we mowed lawns and we cleaned houses all together,” recalled Luke. “We had everybody up on stage at the premiere and I looked down the line and said, ‘I have either worked for, or with every single person that is my family up on stage.’ And the reason why, is we learned to trust to each other in those early days of working together in Nashville, Tennessee.”
