King Charles Sends a Message of Condolence Following India's Devastating Rail Crash

King Charles is currently on a private trip to Romania after arriving publicly in the country on Friday. However, his office remains busy with the official duties of the sovereign—and today, he sent a message of condolence to the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, following the devastating rail crash in Odisha which killed at least 275 people.
“Both my wife and I have been most profoundly shocked and saddened by the news of such a dreadful accident outside Balasore,” the King’s message began. “I would like to express our deepest possible condolences to the families of all those who have so tragically lost their lives.”
He continued, “I do hope you know what a special place India and the people of India have in our hearts. I have particularly fond memories of visiting Odisha in 1980 and meeting some of its people on that occasion. I pray, therefore, that you may be able to convey our most heartfelt prayers and sympathy to all those who have been affected by this appalling tragedy, together with our special thoughts for the people of Odisha.”
Charles last visited India in 2019 when he was the Prince of Wales, on his 10th official visit to the country. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar represented India at the King's coronation in May and President Droupadi Murmu attended Queen Elizabeth’s funeral last September.
The King’s next scheduled public appearance has not yet been announced, but he is expected to be back to work soon after his short break. It is not unexpected for him to spend time in Romania at this time of year, but it happens to fall just as Prince Harry is in the UK for a court appearance.
Tomorrow, Harry is set to become the first British royal to appear in the witness box in more than 100 years when he gives evidence and is cross-examined at the High Court in his phone hacking claim against Mirror Group Newspapers. The court heard today that the Duke of Sussex was not in attendance because he had only left California on Sunday night after celebrating his daughter Princess Lilibet’s second birthday.
The case is one of a number of lawsuits that Harry has brought against British media organizations. In an interview with ITV’s Tom Bradby he described “changing the media landscape within the UK” as being his “life’s work.”
