King Charles and Queen Camilla Attend Church (Where They'll Spend Christmas) amid Royal Book Scandal

The King and Queen were seen together for the first time since the publication of 'Endgame' last week

King Charles and Queen Camilla are carrying on as controversy around the new book Endgame continues to make waves.

On Sunday, the King, 75, and Queen, 76, stepped out to attend church at St. Mary Magdalene, which is a short walk from Sandringham House in Norfolk. As they made their way over, King Charles chatted with the Reverend Canon Dr. Paul Williams.

The couple left the Advent Sunday service at Sandringham on foot, with Queen Camilla seen smiling as they left the church.

In just a few weeks, the couple is expected to continue tradition and lead the royal family's annual church outing to St. Mary Magdalene on Christmas Day. Christmas at Sandringham, the royal family’s private estate in the Norfolk countryside, is a staple on the royal calendar, and Queen Elizabeth spent the holiday there as a child.

ITV royal editor Chris Ship reported in November that members of Queen Camilla’s family will be invited to join the Christmas Day lunch for the first time. In years past, Camilla would leave the royal family's Christmas gathering in the afternoon to spend time with her kids, Tom Parker Bowles and Laura Lopes, and five grandchildren on the holiday.

The Sunday outing marked King Charles and Queen Camilla's first joint appearance since the publication of Omid Scobie’s new book Endgame: Inside the Royal Family and the Monarchy’s Fight for Survival on Nov. 28. The book, which was originally excerpted in PEOPLE, caused controversy after it was revealed that the Dutch translation of the book names the royals involved in a conversation that included a controversial comment speculating about the skin color of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's child.

In separate statements to PEOPLE, Scobie and the Dutch publishers said the names were an “error.” Buckingham Palace had no comment.

During Meghan and Harry's interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, the Duchess of Sussex alleged that there were "concerns and conversations about how dark [Archie's] skin might be when he's born." When Oprah asked who made that comment, Meghan declined to answer, saying the revelation would be too damaging.

Princess Kate and Prince William ignored questions from reporters about the book when they stepped out to attend the Royal Variety Performance on Nov. 30.

As seen in a video captured by PEOPLE's Simon Perry at the event, reporters yelled, "Your Royal Highness, have you got a comment about Omid Scobie's book?" and "Did you watch the Piers Morgan show last night, Your Royal Highnesses?,” referencing the latest episode of Piers Morgan Uncensored, where the subject was discussed.

On Thursday, King Charles briefly spoke about how he was feeling while meeting with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at COP28 in Dubai. The sovereign turned 75 on Nov. 14 — and seemed to poke some fun at his age.

“Asked how he was, His Majesty said: ‘I’m all right very much, just about,” Daily Mail royal correspondent Rebecca English wrote on X. “ ‘Having had a rather ancient birthday recently recovering from the shock of that!’ ”
