On the heels of two of his grandchildren’s birthdays, and at his first public outing since revealing his cancer diagnosis, King Charles III made an interesting fashion statement. The monarch wore a pink silk tie that was adorned with … blue dinosaurs. And we have to wonder, was this his grandchildren’s choice? Did he do it for them? Or is the 75-year-old just really into dinosaurs?

It certainly could have been from Prince George, who apparently loves dinosaurs thanks to David Attenborough.

“He was brilliant with the children when he met them,” Prince William previously told the BBC per Hello! “He brought out his fossil collection and showed the children that, which, I think, George at the time absolutely adored – he’s got loads of dinosaur fossils.”

According to People, the King has had the tie since at least January 2023 when he wore it to a church service.

The Daily Mail has speculated that the tie was a Christmas gift from one of his grandchildren, and royal biographer Robert Hardman thinks it connects to a royal symbol.

“Featuring a blue dinosaur pattern on a pink silk background, it is a cheeky play on his official ‘Charles III Rex’ cypher,” Hardman said. “Staff know that when ‘C-Rex’ is wearing his ‘T-Rex’ tie, he probably has a spring in his step.”

Regardless of its meaning, it’s actually a really endearing move coming from the divisive King. I’d like to think it was for the benefit of his grandkids — two of whom just celebrated their birthdays. Yesterday, Princess Charlotte turned 9, and last week, Prince Louis turned 6.

Their parents, Prince William and Kate Middleton, posted new photos of their children to mark the special occasions. And while the dinosaurs may have been a nod to the young royals, it’s believed the kids each did something to honor family members in their birthday photos. Prince Louis may have chosen his shirt in honor of his big brother Prince George, 10. And Princess Charlotte may have chosen the location of her portrait as a tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Whatever the case may be, we hope to see more fun ties from the seemingly stuffy sovereign.
