King Charles III expected 2023 to be his golden year with his ascension to the throne, officially marked by his coronation. But it’s likely to be one of his most controversial, and he doesn’t just have a royal family feud with Prince Harry to blame. Omid Scobie’s Nov. 28 book, Endgame: Inside the Royal Family and the Monarchy’s Fight for Survival, is rattling palace walls more than anyone ever expected.

Insiders who spoke to Scobie paint Charles as a very “pampered” royal with an “extravagantly luxurious lifestyle,” according to an excerpt obtained by The Sun. Some of the allegations about his demands are absurd, including the claim that the palace staff has to iron his shoelaces. “When laces get even the smallest bit threadbare, a staff member must quickly switch them out with a fresh, ironed pair,” reads the excerpt. That sounds like an almost unbelievable request, but royal fans have heard whispers like this before, including his need to travel with his own toilet seat.

The king, who inherited an enormous real estate portfolio, also needs his bed sheets to be perfect — reportedly 1,000 thread count and without a wrinkle in sight. While that might only be a request of someone who is uber-wealthy, this next tiny detail outlined in Scobie’s book sent us over the edge: “There is even a rumour (one that, surprisingly, sources have confirmed) that Charles likes to have someone squeeze exactly one inch of toothpaste on to his toothbrush for him ahead of his bedtime routine.”

These tiny, leaked specifics about King Charles’ life behind palace walls probably won’t land so well when there is a cost-of-living crisis happening in the U.K. It will only fuel the anti-monarchists even more — their protests will become louder as the royal family attempts to keep themselves relevant in the modern age. Even when Charles does make cuts to the royal budget, having a huge staff perform very privileged tasks lands with a thud of hypocrisy.
