King Charles Covers Magazine Ahead of 75th Birthday — and Photographer Has Close Tie to Queen Elizabeth

The King marked the launch of his Coronation Food Project with an image captured by world-renowned photographer John Waddell Rankin

King Charles is at a cover star — as his 75th birthday approaches!

To mark his milestone birthday on Tuesday and the corresponding launch of the Coronation Food Project, the King is featured on the front page of the Big Issue. The image was captured by world-renowned photographer John Waddell Rankin, better known as Rankin, in the gardens of Clarence House, King Charles and Queen Camilla's main residence in London, last month.

Rankin was one of 10 photographers invited to create a portfolio of new portraits of Queen Elizabeth as part of her Golden Jubilee in 2002. He captured a famous photo of the late monarch — taken in front of the throne in the ballroom at Buckingham Palace from a low and close angle, he digitally superimposed the image against the Union Flag.

"I have had the opportunity to document the world’s most famous face," the photographer said, according to the Royal Collection Trust. "I only hope I have done justice to the person behind the face."

Rankin said of photographing the King: "It was an absolute honor to shoot this specifically for The Big Issue and specifically around the Coronation Food Project, which I’m a big supporter of, and is something we don’t talk about enough. I’ve always thought that he’s a very resilient human being. I think that’s what I got from him, that kind of steely determination," according to The Independent.

The Big Issue’s article, which will be published on Monday, dives into the launch of the Coronation Food Project. Big Issue speaks to Baroness Louise Casey and Dame Martina Milburn, both co-chairs of the new initiative, to highlight the issue of food insecurity across the U.K.

King Charles said in the feature, “Food need is as real and urgent a problem as food waste — and if a way could be found to bridge the gap between them, then it would address two problems in one. It is my great hope that this Coronation Food Project will find practical ways to do just that — rescuing more surplus food, and distributing it to those who need it most.”

On Tuesday, King Charles and Queen Camilla will spend part of his birthday launching the Coronation Food Project — named because of its launch during the same year as the crowning ceremony — by touring a surplus food distribution center outside London. The royal couple will meet staff and volunteers and hear about “the ways food waste can be used for social good."

Aside from the Coronation Food Project, King Charles will mark his birthday on Monday with a party at his country home Highgrove House. There, he'll join others turning 75 this year for afternoon tea and live music.

On Tuesday, the monarch will host a reception to celebrate nurses and midwives working in the U.K.

On the same day, Piccadilly Circus (and other digital sites across the U.K.) will display a 10-minute animation featuring the Coronation Food Project.

It's also expected that members of the royal family will gather for a private birthday celebration.
