Kim Kardashian Empathizes with Prince Harry & Meghan Markle's Need for a 'Secure, Safe Place'

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are getting support from a different kind of royal: the reality TV kind. In a new interview, Kim Kardashian says she empathizes with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle — and the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star definitely doesn’t begrudge the couple their desire for more safety and privacy, especially since they now have baby Archie to worry about as well.

When asked by Australia’s The Sunday Project if she feels “some sympathy” for Harry and Meghan, Kardashian indicated that she does. “I think everyone has their own journey. I think their journey is extremely personal, with — you know, what his mother experienced and how her life was so affected by the spotlight and by paparazzi,” Kardashian said in reference to Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana, who died in a car crash in 1997 at the age of 36.

Kardashian continued, “I don’t think anyone can really understand what that’s like except for them. But I think as I’m older and as I have kids, what I would want for them is just the safest place. I can definitely empathize with their need for having a secure, safe place and taking time for themselves and having privacy when they need it.”

In recent months, Harry and Meghan’s already contentious relationship with British media has gotten even more intense. They made waves in October when they filed a lawsuit against the Associated Newspapers in response to the Mail on Sunday publishing a private and deeply personal letter Meghan had written to her father, Thomas Markle.

Meghan’s lawyers filed legal documents detailing all of the Mail on Sunday‘s claims the royal couple is refuting. Among them? That Harry and Meghan spent half a million dollars of taxpayers’ money to soundproof Frogmore Cottage, and that Meghan’s New York City baby shower cost $300,000 (Meghan’s lawyer asserts it “actually cost a tiny fraction” of that).

Harry and Meghan also opened up about their issues with the U.K. tabloids during their recent ITV documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, with Harry pointing out the behavior alarmingly echoes the paparazzi shortly before his mother’s death. “I will not be bullied into playing a game that killed my mum,” he said, adding, “I think being part of this family — in this role, in this job — every single time I see a camera, every single time I hear a click, every single time I see a flash, it takes me straight back.”
