How Kim Kardashian Convinced Kanye West Not to Move Their Family to Chicago Full-Time

Kim Kardashian West is a California girl through and through — and it doesn’t look like that’ll be changing anytime soon.

On Sunday’s episode of Keeping up with the Kardashians, video surfaced of Kanye West announcing during a performance in September that he was moving to his hometown of Chicago. It was news to his wife, who admitted that she was “a little bit annoyed” that she found out about the move on social media. And while she certainly wasn’t ready to uproot their family, West, 41, seemed set on the idea.

“We moving to Chicago,” he told her. “That’s the vibe, babe. It feels good.”

“I get that Kanye is really excited about Chicago,” acknowledged Kardashian West, 38. “He just needs a change of scene. I totally respect that, but I can’t really imagine moving to Chicago. I think I’m going to kind of ride it out and see it through, because with him I just always want to make sure that this is what he wants to do. Then we make a real, informed decision.”

By the end of the episode, Kardashian West had decided that she and the couple’s three kids would definitely not be moving to Chicago — and she had to break the news to her husband.

“I’m really happy that Chicago is such a good place for Kanye. It’s where he grew up, he has so many different memories there, there’s a lot that he wants to do there,” she said. “But I definitely feel I’m being pulled in a million directions. The kids are in school and we have another baby on the way, so moving to Chicago would have to be a long conversation. And honestly, it might be my breaking point.”

“I do think it’s really important to definitely support my husband, but our whole life is in California,” she continued. “I met him when he lived in California. It’s not like I met him when he lived in Chicago and he moved to California for us. Maybe we should get a place in Chicago that we can go back and forth to, but it’s not going to benefit us if we’re that separated all the time.”

Sitting down with West, Kardashian West pointed out that a permanent move would just be too hectic given the fact that the kids are in school.

“I don’t want to uproot them from all of their friends and their routine and their cousins and everything,” she said. “I just think that it would be amazing to have a second place in Chicago and if you need to spend more time out there, that’s totally fine, but I think it would be really hard just to take the kids and leave and permanently move to Chicago.”

“When I went to Chicago, I felt like I was home,” West said. “There were a lot of things that I missed not being there for a long, long, long time. I feel connected, I feel inspired when we’re there.”

“It’s funny because you said I said, ‘I’m never going home,’ but what is home though, exactly?” he continued. “I literally have a song called ‘Coming Home’ — it is not about a house in Hidden Hills.”

“So what do you want to do? Do you want to live in Chicago and I’ll live here and we’ll FaceTime?” asked Kardashian West. “I mean, I’m willing to split it, I’m just saying during the school year, it’s going to be really hard.”

Eventually, West agreed. “We’re not going to move full-time,” he said. “But we will spend time [there], because that’s my home, too.”

A source recently told PEOPLE that West “seems happy” living in Los Angeles with his family since agreeing to stay on the West Coast.

“Kanye is excited about being in L.A. now since he has his spiritual service every Sunday,” said the source.

And had West actually followed through with the move, it’s safe to assume that Kardashian West wouldn’t have come along.

“Kim was never going to move to Chicago and hoped that Kanye would change his mind quickly, like he usually does when he gets spontaneous ideas,” the source said.

A second source previously told PEOPLE that Kardashian West wants to continue to raise the couple’s three children — North, 5, Saint, 3, and Chicago, 14 months — in Calabasas, California, near her famous family.

“She thinks it’s best for the kids to continue their schedule in LA. North is in school and everything is working great,” the source said. “Kim doesn’t think a permanent move to Chicago benefits the kids. Also, Kim wants to be around her family as much as possible too. She loves their new house and it finally feels like a home to her.”
