Kim Cattrall Reveals Her Newly-Single Celebrity Crush & Discusses a SATC Spin-off Focused On Samatha

Kim Cattrall is not done with Samantha Jones just yet. The actress, who just reprised her famous Sex and the City character for a brief cameo in the season finale of And Just Like That…, dished on the future for the character in a conversation with Katie Couric during the Forbes Power Women’s Summit on September 14.

Cattrall, 67, told the Katie Couric Media founder that she was initially hesitant to accept the role due to feeling like she was too old to play a character as sexually liberated and provocative as Samantha. “When they offered me the role, I just turned 40. And this was in 1997. And 40, in 1997 was not 40 Today,” she said but added that she took a chance when showrunner Darren Star told her the show would redefine what 40 looked like in popular media.

“So at 41 with just that promise, I took that step. And I’m so glad I did. She changed my life,” Cattrall said.

When Couric asked if Cattrall would ever be open to a spin-off centered on Samantha, the actress didn’t explicitly say yes or no but it did appear that she had at least given it some thought. She expressed interest in the prospect of seeing Samantha’s “perspective on the world now, as opposed to then,” noting that in the years since the show ended in 2004 so much social change has occured.

“I mean, most of the scenes in Sex and the City, I would not [be] able to do that [now] without a counselor there,” she says, detailing that many of Samantha’s explicit scenes were done without the help of intimacy coaches or other support offered to actors today.

“I would love to hear a character like Samantha, her point of view about what’s going on in New York City or London or wherever the city is,” she added. If the spin-off ever transpires, we’ll be the first to tune in!

At the close of the interview, Couric offered a bit of comedic relief in the form of a quick-fire question round and Cattrall revealed that her celebrity crush is none other than Kevin Costner who is currently going through a very high-profile (and seemingly bitter) divorce from his wife Christine Baumgartner.

“I hear he’s free,” Cattrall joked before Couric quipped, “But you’re not,” referring to Cattrall’s relationship with her partner of seven years, Russell Thomas. Well, if only one thing Cattrall discussed in this interview comes true, we hope it’s a Samantha-focused SATC spin-off and not a relationship with Costner!
