Killingly's Board of Education chairwoman resigned early Friday. Here's what she said.

KILLINGLY - Janice Joly, chairwoman of the Killingly Board of Education, has resigned, district officials confirmed.

Superintendent Robert Angeli said Joly filed her resignation with the town clerk early Friday.

The letter consists of just one sentence and does not give a reason for Joly's abrupt departure from the board.

"Please be advised that effective immediately, on Friday, April 8, 2022, I am resigning my position as a member of the Killingly Board of Education," the letter states.

Joly, a Republican who was appointed to fill a board vacancy in February 2020 and later elected to a term last year, was named chairwoman earlier this year after the former Chairman Doug Farrow resigned.

Joly has been the target of increased criticism by opponents in past months for her opposition to a proposed school-based health center and her push to decrease public comments during meetings.

Angeli said the Killingly Republican Town Committee will forward potential replacements for the open board slot and members will conduct interviews before a vote takes place.

More: 'End it once and for all.' Why did Killingly's BOE rescind, not suspend, its mask policy?

He said the board must also name a new chairman. A draft item for such an appointment is being added to the board's Wednesday meeting agenda, though the document is not yet finalized.

Without Joly, the usual nine member board now consists of five Republicans and three Democrats.
