Ric Ocasek of The Cars passed away last Sunday, and tributes have been pouring in ever since. Thursday night saw The Killers played their first show since the frontman’s death, and they honored the new wave legend by covering “My Best Friend’s Girl”.

The Killers dropped the song into the middle of their hit “All These Things That I’ve Done” during a concert in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. In fan-shot video of the performance, the crowd can be heard chanting the memorable, “I’ve got soul but I’m not a soldier” bridge. Frontman Brandon Flowers turned his back on the audience for a few measures, communicating with the band. When he finally returned to the mic, he cut off the “soul” bit to launch into the iconic short-long-short clap that starts off “My Best Friend’s Girl”. After the joyous performance seemed to be over, Flowers smiled at the audience before returning to The Killers’ familiar refrain once again.

This isn’t the first time The Killers have covered The Cars. In 2018 they did a version of “Just What I Needed” at Madison Square Garden, which Flowers opened with a heartfelt speech about growing up idolizing Ocasek. Flowers also inducted The Cars into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year. Shortly after Ocasek died, Flowers shared an email he sent to the late singer on Twitter, calling him “My first king:”

Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus also recently revealed a cover of The Cars in tribute to Ocasek. His was an unused, “moody” version of “Just What I Needed” recorded for a TV that never made it to air.
