Killer Mike Talks Grammys Sweep During Black History Month
Killer Mike swept this year at the 2024 Grammys with his wins for Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song, and Best Rap Performance. Like many of his Black music predecessors, the Atlanta native entered the backstage press room cradling his Grammys and basking in the glow of his recent wins.
When reflecting on the monumental feat, he imparted a bit of wisdom. “You can make one hit song, make 10 hit songs. The only thing stopping you, the only limitation you have is your imagination,” said the 48-year-old. “It’s our opportunity; it is our must. It is our absolute responsibility to be grand in every action. For 20 years I’ve been saying, ‘I can do it, I can do it, I can do it.’ Then in the 20th year of Hip-Hop, here I am doing it.”
Later, Killer Mike was asked to share his feelings on taking home these wins during Black History Month.
“I think all Black people and other people should be celebrating Black History Month because it is for us all,” he shared after dubbing his hometown the “capital of Black America.”
Mike continued, “I think Atlanta’s the mecca of the Black world and people should be there, investing in there.” He also spoke on how diverse Atlanta sound is, noting, “Whether it’s Kenny Mason, Killer Mike, Outkast, T.I., or Jeezy, we are giving you a plethora of styles that you should be listening to.”
Additionally, Mike feels Hip-Hop is ageless. “I remember being in fourth grade and they saying it wouldn’t last two years. I remember being in eighth grade, they said it wasn’t a real art form. I remember being in the 12th grade, my homeroom teacher tell me it’ll never happen. And here it is, 30 years later, look at it happening [..] At 48 years old, I stand here a man full of empathy and sympathy for the things I’ve done, honest in my interpretations of where I’ve been and it connected with thousands of other people and I’m grateful to be holding these records that they don’t ever have.”
Overall, he feels he’s consciously works hard to be the best and make the best music. He also intends to dominate Hip-Hop and the Grammys again next year. See his acceptance speech below.
