'The Killer' Looks Like Another Deliciously Perverse David Fincher Thriller
David Fincher is back with another heart-racing thriller. The director’s latest project, The Killer, looks very much in the vein of Gone Girl, Se7en, Zodiac, and Panic Room. (Think: Deliciously perverse storytelling featuring a mind-boggling protagonist.) Here's the official synopsis:
Solitary, cold, methodical, and unencumbered by scruples or regrets, a killer waits in the shadows watching for his next target. Yet, the longer he waits, the more he thinks he’s losing his mind, if not his cool.
Michael Fassbender stars as the killer in question alongside Tilda Swinton, who is simply named, “The Expert.” In the film's first trailer, we see them at odds as Fassbender wrestles with the consequences of his actions. “For what it’s worth,” Swinton says, “I never would have involved your female friend.” Cue the image of said woman, wrapped up in bandages from head to toe. Is the unfortunate victim his girlfriend? Maybe she’s a coworker, or a long-lost love? Only time will tell, but luckily, we don’t have to wait long to see how this story pans out.
The Killer premieres in theaters on November 10. Earlier this year, The Killer screened at the Venice Film Festival and New York Film Festival, where it received glowing reviews. IndieWire’s Ryan Lattanizo described it as simple, yet intriguing. “The Killer is nothing if not committed to its own one-note bit,” he said. “An existential nihilism that stays the same even as the protagonist, in a mostly silent Michael Fassbender performance, starts to change. It’s as unfeeling as any Fincher thriller, at once predictable in its simplicity but also strangely daring because of it.”
