Killer Flamingos is bringing its smoking geysers, pink light tubes and light show back to St. Mary’s Park.

The 29-year-old, Detroit-based band debuted in the Concert in the Park series last summer. The band returns this summer to close out this year's series.

Killer Flamingos will play at 7 p.m. Aug. 17 in the park's bandshell, 111 W. Elm Ave. The concert series is sponsored by the city of Monroe’s Parks and Recreation Department. Admission to all events is free. Attendees should bring blankets or chairs. The Meat Guys BBQ Shack food truck will be at the park. The Social District also will be open.

Other food trucks will be in the downtown vicinity for Aug. 17's Ducky Dash. Because of the anticipated large crowd for the concert and Ducky Dash, Elm Avenue will be closed.

Killer Flamingos performs recent and popular music.

“We play everything from the ‘80s, ‘90s, early 2000s to today's top 40. Our show is full of back-to-back dance medleys, with one song leading directly into the next,” vocalist Alyssa Simmons said. "We have an epic, high-energy concert planned. Our show features multiple singers, driving bass and drums, explosive guitar and keytar solos."

This year, the band is bringing even more songs to the park.

“There have been a ton of new songs and super fun medleys added to our setlist since the last time we performed in Monroe, so we're excited to unleash them this year,” Simmons said. “Last year's St. Mary's performance was a blast. We love having this show on our summer schedule.”

Special effects also are returning to the park.

“The pink light tubes and smoking geysers have become a staple for our live show that really amplify the concert experience. People really dig them,” Simmons said.

Killer Flamingos has had the same band members for years. Earlier this year, it lost a longtime member.

“Our drummer and musical brother of 16 years, Tim Webber, unexpectedly passed away in February. It's been heart-wrenching for all who loved him and a big adjustment period for our band," Simmons said. "We now have the talented Jeff Supina behind the kit, and he has been absolutely crushing it."

Supina also sings. Other band members are: Darren Drake, vocals and keyboard; David Gondoly, vocals and bass; and Todd Best, guitar.

Killer Flamingos plays about 200 shows a year.

“We love to keep busy,” Simmons said. “We play all over Michigan and all over Ohio with occasional fly dates in between. Next year the band celebrates its 30th year anniversary, so with that, we plan to commemorate with an epic show in its honor."
