Kieran Culkin a 'Bit Thrown' by Sarah Snook, Wife Plucking 'Painful' Hair from Ear Before Critics Choice Awards Win

'Succession' stars Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong, Tom Hiddleston from 'Loki', Timothy Olyphant of 'Justified: City Primeval', Pedro Pascal from 'The Last of Us' and 'Will Trent' star Ramón Rodríguez were all nominated

TV's favorite dramatic actor has been named at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards!

Succession's Kieran Culkin took the stage to accept the coveted award and forgot everything he wanted to say. What followed, instead, was an unexpected rant about his dual ear hairs — which were painfully plucked by his wife, Jazz Charton, and costar Sarah Snook just before he stepped on stage.

"I'm a little bit thrown, actually," Culkin, 41, began. "I have this hair that grows on the side of my ear. Not like an ear hair."

Culkin then noted how his wife sometimes "surprises me" by plucking the hair — and so does Snook. But during Sunday's award show, he discovered yet another hair of unusual length on the other side of his head.

When Snook plucked one from his left ear, Culkin realized it wasn't the one he was used to feeling. So, his wife discovered another hair was still rooted and growing. "They both started taking turns plucking my hair, and it was really painful," Culkin continued to the laughter of his peers. "And now, I'm here talking about it instead of saying what I had prepared to say, which is gone now. And I'm probably out of time."

Culkin used the remainder of his speech to shout out the camera crew on Succession. "I feel like they're always underappreciated — it's the camera department," he said. "In particular, the cameras operators. I mean, they film the thing. I feel like on our show, they were kind of like lifesavers."

As he walked off stage, Culkin gave the crowd one last laugh when he mouthed to the camera: "What was I saying?"

The nominees for this year's big prize included Culkin's Succession costar Jeremy Strong, Loki's Tom Hiddleston, Timothy Olyphant from Justified: City Primeval, The Last of Us star Pedro Pascal and Ramón Rodríguez of Will Trent.

Culkin scored his third Critics' Choice nomination for the final season of HBO's Succession. His performance tracking Roman Roy's descent from smug to shattered to shambolic already won him a 2024 Golden Globe Award on Jan. 7.

In addition to his on-screen brother Strong's nomination, their screen sister Snook, also scored a 2024 CCA nomination — and won! — for best drama actress, while Matthew MacFadyen received a supporting actor nomination. The show itself was among the drama series nominated for TV's biggest prize of the night.

Marvel fans will be super familiar with Hiddleston's work as the devilish Norse god Loki, and the Disney+ series has been Hiddleston's playground since June 2021.

Hiddleston has described Loki as "a complex figure. Intelligent yet vulnerable. Angry and lost and broken and witty," and his collaborative partnership with Kenneth Branagh — who first cast him in the part for 2011's Thor — as “life-changing.”

On top of Hiddleston's own acting nod, his costars Ke Huy Quan and Sophia Di Martino both received supporting nominations. The show was also honored with a best drama series nod.

Olyphant returned to the role of Raylan Givens, which he previously embodied on Justified from 2010 to 2015, for its spinoff series Justified: City Primeval.

The role of the U.S. Marshal has been good to Olyphant, who also scored a 2011 Emmy nomination for his performance.

The Last of Us — based on the video game of the same name — takes place in post-apocalyptic America and sees Pascal's loner Joel reluctantly team up with 14-year-old Ellie (Bella Ramsey), who may be the only shot at saving civilization as the pair are beset by zombie-like mutants and cutthroat survivors.

In addition to Pascal's nomination, Ramsey was also honored with a best actress nod at this year's awards, and the HBO show itself was among the nominees for best drama series.

The second season of The Last of Us will premiere on HBO in 2025, with production slated to start next month.

Rodríguez's standout turn as title character Will Trent in ABC's procedural crime drama earned him the show's sole nomination at this year's CCAs.

He told PEOPLE of the show ahead of its debut last January: "This is a crime drama that has a lot of heart and doesn't take itself so serious. It laughs at itself at times. I think that's the fine line only that we've been able to spar. There's some seriousness, there's some drama, but yet we are able to thread the needle with including some humor in there and levity."

Of his character, he added, "I love this character. I adore him. I think he's just a very complicated human being that is doing his best to navigate the world."

Four seasons of failed coup attempts on Succession earned Strong three Critics' Choice nominations since the HBO drama debuted in June 2018.

The series finale saw Strong's character Kendall Roy left alone and bereft, contemplating a future without father, family or power once and for all. Presumably Sunday's ceremony was a bit more celebratory for the actor, who joined Culkin, Snook, Macfadyen and the show itself as one the series' five 2024 CCA nods.

Succession won the Critics Choice Award for best drama series.
